These works, now in the Ashmolean Museum, form the basis for this fascinating study. Selecting the finest drawings in the colection, Nicholas Penny traces Ruskin's career as an artist and reveals the elaborate, but unfulfilled, educational programme that lay behind his gift. The Ashmolean's collection of Ruskin's drawings is unrivalled, and this selection includes architectural drawings, landscapes, and studies of trees, flowers and birds.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49505931886865,"sku":"GOR002134498","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":49576071987473,"sku":"CIN0907849741A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49805358072081,"sku":"GOR002521718","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50283291214097,"sku":"GOR008095509","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0907849741.jpg?v=1751140063"},{"product_id":"materials-of-sculpture-book-nicholas-penny-9780300065817","title":"The Materials of Sculpture","description":"This beautiful book surveys the sculpture of many civilizations—from ancient Egypt, Greece, and China to fifteenth-century Italy, nineteenth-century France, and twentieth-century North America. It provides a basic introduction to the nature of the materials used by sculptors, examining how these were regarded as well as how they were worked in different periods and in different cultures. The book begins with the hardest stones that are worked with abrasives, goes on to discuss marble and softer stones and organic materials, such as wood and ivory, considers plastic materials (clay, stucco, gesso, and wax), both as molded materials and modeled ones, and then describes the casting and tooling of metal. Each chapter defines the limitations and challenges special to the material, examining, for example, its availability, value, durability, versatility, size, and color. Considering the ways in which artists have transferred techniques from one medium to another and striven to imitate in one material effects associated with another—how, for example, ivory carving has influenced porcelain models and pieced wooden sculpture has influenced marble carving—Nicholas Penny questions and qualifies the most powerful idea in the education of the sculptor in this century—the relation of truth to material. Full of facts drawn from rare and obscure publications and taking account of newer research (some carried out at the author's own request), the book combines useful information with stimulating speculation. It will be welcomed by sculpture lovers everywhere and provides an essential guide for students.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49512356151569,"sku":"GOR003096738","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49644263637265,"sku":"GOR004598044","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49780936179985,"sku":"GOR010092363","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51383027794193,"sku":"GOR004859023","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0300065817.jpg?v=1750941171"},{"product_id":"ruskin-s-drawings-book-nicholas-penny-9781854441041","title":"Ruskin's Drawings","description":"The books in this series aim to bring to a wide public the chief glories of the rich and varied collections of fine and decorative art in the Ashmolean Museum. This “fiction” was central to the artist’s purpose. Through a close examination of paintings from the 1400s to the early 20th century, including works by Uccello, Vermeer, Titian, and Monet, Nicholas Penny explains in this latest title in the National Gallery’s Closer Look series how artists sought to make the fiction of pictorial space compelling, not only through the use of linear or aerial perspective, but also through the choice and intensity of color, the variations in light, and the texture of the painted surface.   Published by National Gallery Company\/Distributed by Yale University Press","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49538593423633,"sku":"GOR011450229","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1857096169.jpg?v=1751434530"},{"product_id":"materials-of-sculpture-book-nicholas-penny-9780300055566","title":"The Materials of Sculpture","description":"This is a book that explains, with copious illustrations, both textual and pictorial, how sculpture is made. It is a survey of world sculpture that cuts across the divisions of school and chronology and examines in detail works of art, taken from all the major civilizations (from the earliest surviving Egyptian and Chinese sculpture to that of the twentieth century in Europe and Northern America), in terms of the materials and techniques used. The book is divided into chapters according to the material used - granite, ivory, wax etc. The limitations and challenges special to each of the materials - its availability, durability, versatility, size, colour etc - are defined and discussed, not only between the materials themselves, but between the art of different cultures. The book gives a completely new perspective to the history of world sculpture, and provides an excellent basic introduction to the way sculpture is made and what it is made from.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49547220123921,"sku":"CIN0300055560G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49548053152017,"sku":"GOR013738453","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52750345699601,"sku":"GOR008378741","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53337673433361,"sku":"GOR005009830","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0300055560.jpg?v=1750738388"},{"product_id":"metamorphosis-book-nicholas-penny-9781857095470","title":"Metamorphosis","description":"As part of a unique collaboration between the National Gallery and the Royal Opera House, fourteen leading poets were invited to respond to three great masterpieces by the Renaissance painter, Titian: \"Diana and Callisto\", \"Diana and Actaeon\" and \"The Death of Actaeon\". Titian's paintings were inspired by Ovid's \"Metamorphoses\" - stories of transformation - and depict the fatal consequences of a mortal tragically caught up in the affairs of the gods. Titian would have known Ovid's poem from a contemporary translation in Italian. This book's introduction by Nicholas Penny, Ovid, Titian, and English Poetry, shows how Titian incorporated specific elements from Ovid's verses in his paintings, and compares some of the most famous translations in English, from the first version by Arthur Golding (1565) to those by Joseph Addison (1717) and Ted Hughes (1997). The late Lucian Freud described \"Diana and Callisto\" and \"Diana and Actaeon\" as 'simply the most beautiful pictures in the world'. These new poems, each illustrated with full-colour details from Titian's paintings, demonstrate the quality and range of writing in Britain today, and show how Old Master paintings continue to inspire living artists.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49554393334033,"sku":"GOR004811012","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":52107297390865,"sku":"CIN1857095472VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1857095472.jpg?v=1751185925"},{"product_id":"ruskin-s-drawings-in-the-ashmolean-museum-book-nicholas-penny-9780714880631","title":"Ruskin's Drawings in the Ashmolean Museum","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49561942032657,"sku":"GOR002493122","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49615133507857,"sku":"GOR005327670","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52771808706833,"sku":"GOR013049488","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0714880639.jpg?v=1751231575"},{"product_id":"national-gallery-london-book-nicholas-penny-9781857596410","title":"National Gallery London","description":"The National Gallery in London is home to one of the greatest collections of Western European painting in the world, from the late medieval period to the beginning of the 20th century. It demonstrates the diversity and richness of French art of this period and provides an important overview of the major movements and stylistic developments that flourished then. The revolutionary Neo-Classicism of David, the Romanticism of Delacroix and Gericault, and the Realism of Courbet are seen against a background of traditional academic history and religious painting in a survey that, unusually, does not begin or end at 1800. It discusses exhibiting and selling art in France, the educational ideals, and the market which shaped the nature of French painting in those years. The catalogue entries supply commentary both on works by major artists and on those by lesser figures greatly esteemed by their contemporaries and now again receiving the recognition they deserve.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49593477202193,"sku":"GOR009278364","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50606492680465,"sku":"GOR007469522","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1857090187.jpg?v=1750899410"},{"product_id":"tradition-and-revolution-in-french-art-1700-1880-book-nicholas-penny-9781857090178","title":"Tradition and Revolution in French Art, 1700-1880","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49621669576977,"sku":"GOR001960157","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50964138950929,"sku":"GOR001782967","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1857090179.jpg?v=1751155321"},{"product_id":"closer-look-frames-book-nicholas-penny-9781857094404","title":"A Closer Look: Frames","description":"Frames often catch the eye and arouse the curiosity of visitors to galleries and museums, yet labels and catalogues rarely comment on them. In this catalogue—the first of two volumes devoted to the museum’s Italian painting collection—noted art historian Sir Nicholas Penny pairs 47 paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries with in-depth commentary, skillfully interweaving tales from the artists’ lives, observations on the artists’ influences and patronage, and notes on provenance and frames. The works featured here include Guido Cagnacci’s (1601–1663) impressive Conversion of the Mary Magdalene and Guercino’s (1591–1666) formidable Aldovrandi Dog, among other works by such artists as Guido Reni (1610\/12–1662), Luca Giordano (1634–1705), Giambattista Tiepolo (1696–1770), and Canaletto (1697–1768). They were reproduced in marble, bronze and lead, as plaster casts in academies and art schools, as porcelain figurines for chimneypieces and as cameos for bracelets and snuffboxes. They were celebrated by poets from Du Bellay and Marino to Byron and D'Annunzio, and memorably evoked by novelists as diverse as Marcel Proust and Nathaniel Hawthorne, George Eliot and Charles Dickens. Copies of some of these statues can be seen at Pavlosk and Madrid, at Stourhead, Charlottenburg, Malibu and Versailles, and in countless gardens, houses and museums throughout the world. How and when did these particular sculptures achieve such a special status? Who were the collectors, restorers, dealers, artists, dilettanti, scholars and archaeologists who created their reputations? Under what names (often wildly fanciful) did they first become famous? How were they interpreted, and how and when and why did their glamour begin to wane? These are some of the problems that are confronted in Taste and the Antique. Taste and the Antique has become a classic of art history since its original publication in 1981. This revised and amplified edition significantly updates the information based on new research undertaken in the last several decades, as well as expanding examples of the reception and influence of these works by artists and collectors from the Renaissance through to contemporary art. The original edition has been expanded into three volumes: Volume 1 is a revised and amplified version of the 1981 edition. Fifteen chapters trace in narrative form, with the support of a wide variety of plates, the rise and decline of this highly important episode in the history of taste. These chapters are followed by catalogue entries for 95 of the most celebrated sculptures, all of them illustrated, which provide information on when and where they were discovered, changes of ownership and nomenclature, as well as a record of varying critical fortunes designed to complement the more general discussion in the earlier chapters. Volume 2 contains especially commissioned new photography of over 90 statues catalogued in Volume 1. Volume 3 is entirely devoted to a visual survey of the full range of replicas and adaptations of the works catalogued and illustrated in the previous volumes. The book is indispensable for historians of taste, and to art historians concerned with the debt owed by numerous artists from the Renaissance onwards to the art of ancient Greece and Rome; and it is also of great value to students and collectors of the many surviving copies of the sculptures discussed.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51818321936657,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51818321969425,"sku":"NGR9781909400252","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52674070446353,"sku":"NLS9781909400252","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781909400252.jpg?v=1752495151"},{"product_id":"sixteenth-century-italian-paintings-book-nicholas-penny-9781857099133","title":"The Sixteenth-Century Italian Paintings","description":"Catalogues paintings from Venice made between 1540 and 1600. The artists include such well-known names as Lorenzo Lotto, Moretto, and Moroni, along with less familiar ones such as Bartolomeo Veneto and Callisto Piazza. For each of the paintings, distinguished scholar and curator Nicholas Penny provides information about technique and materials, conservation and condition, and subject and iconography. An account of the painting’s original patronage is followed by a discussion of changing tastes, interpretation, and how the picture was esteemed (or neglected) over the centuries. One third of the paintings catalogued here are portraits, and entries include fascinating sections on contemporary dress, furnishings, and accessories. An appendix provides an illuminating account of some of the great collectors and collections of the past.
