Nothing is held back, the good times, the bad times, the successes, the failures, the conflicts, the battles, the love affairs and the moments of high elation and deep depression.Peter Thornton, Ex-Chairman of the family business tells his story with startling frankness, starting in 1956, through his dismissal from the company in 1987 after a career which had been very successful. It was a dismissal which seemed to be entirely a result of family politics andjealousies and nothing to do with performance - a dismissal resulting from a boardroom coup that tore the heart out of the Thornton family. Themes of destructive and dysfunctional personal relationships, conflict and emotional difficulties are candidly covered. His work is one of civilization's most immaculate achievements, opening out into spirituality and nature and refining the sonnet form.   Following his acclaimed translation of Dante's Inferno, which 'immediately joins ranks with the very best available in English' (Richard Lansing), Peter Thornton brings the poetry of Petrarch to the 21st Century in direct and luminous verse. Complete with introduction and explanatory notes.  AUTHOR: The Italian poet Petrarch is one of the supreme love poets of world literature. Born in Italy in 1304, he moved with his family to Provence. On April 6, 1327, in a church in Avignon, Petrarch was smitten by the sight of a young woman named Laura. She did not return his love, but the love stayed with Petrarch even after Laura's early death. Love became a spiritual ideal, redolent in the natural world. Laura inspired the 366 poems that make up his Canzoniere, or Rerum vulgarum fragmenta, translated here as Scattered Rhymes. Petrarch lived till 1374, and was writing and revising his sonnets into his last years.   Peter Thornton grew up in New York City and attended a Jesuit prep school in Manhattan where the curriculum was still based on Latin and Greek. After graduating from Boston College, he originally set out to be an academic. He took a Ph.D. in English literature at Stanford and taught for several years at Bradley University in Illinois. Then, like his father and his three brothers, he decided to become a lawyer and spent the rest of his career happily practising law in Chicago, where he was recognised as a leading practitioner. The intellectual rigor of the law, however, did not satisfy his hunger for poetry and he spent decades translating Dante and Petrarch into English verse. Peter's translation of Dante's Inferno was acclaimed by Richard Lansing as a work that 'immediately joins ranks with the very best available in English.'","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49742974812433,"sku":"NGR9781909954335","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50401766211857,"sku":"CIN1909954330G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51053336625425,"sku":"NIN9781909954335","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52542074126609,"sku":"NLS9781909954335","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":52815127445777,"sku":"CIN1909954330VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1909954330.jpg?v=1751413192"},{"product_id":"public-order-law-book-peter-thornton-9781851850402","title":"Public Order Law","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49887922061585,"sku":"GOR001906605","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1851850406.jpg?v=1750995983"},{"product_id":"seventeenth-century-interior-decoration-in-england-france-and-holland-book-peter-thornton-9780300027761","title":"Seventeenth Century Interior Decoration in England, France and Holland","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50006112403729,"sku":"GOR003605930","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50921705406737,"sku":"GOR004060662","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51328656670993,"sku":"CIN0300027761VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52885745434897,"sku":"GOR006311874","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0300027761.jpg?v=1750812781"},{"product_id":"authentic-decor-book-peter-thornton-9780297785040","title":"Authentic Decor","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50031601516817,"sku":"GOR009321904","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50726707790097,"sku":"GOR009250003","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50899794100497,"sku":"GOR012135933","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/B000I9K648.jpg?v=1762341628"},{"product_id":"sir-john-soane-book-peter-thornton-9780810938274","title":"Sir John Soane","description":"Sir John Soane (1753-1837), the son of a bricklayer, rose to become one of England's greatest architects as well a remarkably astute collector of objects and works of art. His house, in Lincoln's Inn Fields in London, was bequeathed to the British nation by a private Act of Parliament in 1833 for the benefit of \"Amateurs and Students of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture,\" and the building itself and the collections within now comprise a unique, and extremely popular, public museum. Soane was at the very center of artistic activity in late Georgian England, and his collections reveal the intellectual preoccupations of his day. Amassed over his long lifetime during his travels and from his friends and professional contacts, they include paintings by Hogarth and Turner; Greek, Roman, and Egyptian antiquities; Chinese ceramics; and a vast number of drawings, clocks, models, furniture, gems, jewelry, manuscripts, and other objets d'art that reveal the breadth of Soane's tastes and interests. This handsome book focuses on more than 120 works from Soane's collections, ranging from paintings and sculpture to a watch given by Queen Anne to Sir Christopher Wren. Peter Thornton, Curator of Sir John Soane's Museum, and his research assistant, Helen Dorey, have written lively commentaries to the 130 illustrations, 99 in full color, providing information about the objects themselves and their history, and at the same time shedding light on Soane's life, character, and cultural pursuits. Soane prepared his museum personally, spending huge sums of money and gathering items for their intrinsic value, their appearance, or their associations. His goal was to create a poetic setting, using architecture to evoke the spirit of antiquity. For this reason he arranged his collections not didactically by periods or cultures, but rather mingled together, offering a springboard for the imagination. Sir John Soane: The Architect as Collector is the first book to focus purely on the collections of this working architect, who acquired his treasures as an anthology of antique architecture and decoration and whose hope was that future generations would find in them a source of reference and inspiration.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50248916762897,"sku":"GOR013521171","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50442162438417,"sku":"GOR006438122","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0810938278.jpg?v=1751264837"},{"product_id":"italian-renaissance-interior-1400-1600-book-peter-thornton-9780297830061","title":"The Italian Renaissance Interior, 1400-1600","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50467984802065,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50467987095825,"sku":"GOR007940058","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0297830066.jpg?v=1751291477"},{"product_id":"form-decoration-book-peter-thornton-9780810933408","title":"Form \u0026 Decoration","description":"Written by one of the best-known authorities on the subject, this important reference surveys four centuries of Western decorative arts and design history, tracing the origins of the modern movement further back than in any previous study.Starting with the High Renaissance in Italy, Peter Thornton explores a vast repertoire of motifs and styles. His style is direct and simple, propelled by vivid imagery and sounding emotional depths. Only a verse translation can attempt to capture some of these effects in English. The present translation sails as close as possible to the wind of Dante's actual words while remaining recognisable as contemporary English poetry. Playing it straight, the translation achieves a kind of transparency that allows Dante's stories of passion, violent crime and rollicking satire to make their visual and emotional impact. The intense drama and poetry of the Inferno can be experienced directly in this translation, but a more detailed appreciation of what Dante is doing requires access to scholarly materials that explain at a minimum who Dante meets in hell and why they are there. The extensive notes provided with this translation, intended for students and the general reader, provide that aid but also illuminate the structure of Dante's hell and offer parallels from the philosophy, science, theology and art of the Middle Ages as context for Dante's world view and its relation to classical antiquity.  AUTHOR: Dante was born in Florence in 1265. In the last 15 years of his life he wrote his masterpiece, The Divine Comedy, which begins in autobiography and becomes by its end the single most universal and transcendent work in Western literature.   Translation and notes by Peter Thornton. Peter took a PhD in English literature at Stanford and taught for several years at Bradley University in Illinois. A leading lawyer, he he has spent decades translating Dante and Petrarch into English verse.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50944381878545,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50944381911313,"sku":"GOR014137626","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1909954128.jpg?v=1751346990"},{"product_id":"seventeenth-century-interior-decoration-in-england-france-and-holland-book-peter-thornton-9780300021936","title":"Seventeenth Century Interior Decoration in England, France and Holland","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50980633182481,"sku":"GOR006621605","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50981137187089,"sku":"GOR002412664","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0300021933.jpg?v=1751196068"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/de-ch\/collections\/autor-buecher-von-peter-thornton.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
