Many areas of interest are featured, including: Eastleigh; Dover; Southampton; Brighton; Guildford; Exeter; Plymouth; Guildford; Reading; Salisbury; Winchester; Yeovil. A section is provided for all the important SR locations in London, such as Waterloo station, Stewarts Lane shed, Bricklayers Arms shed, Clapham Junction, Victoria station, etc. There is also a selection of images taken on the Isle of Wight which came under the jurisdiction of the SR. A large number of the area's most recognisable classes are presented: Bulleid's 'Merchant Navy' and 'Battle of Britain'\/'West Country' Pacifics; Maunsell 'King Arthur' and 'Schools', amongst others; Urie 4-6-0s; Drummond M7; Wainwright C Class. The old Adams 415 Class engines have been captured on their native soil, whilst equally ancient Stroudley E1s have been encountered. Also making appearances are BR Standard Class engines, ranging from the 'Britannias' to the 4-6-0s, 2-6-0s and 2-6-4Ts. The locomotives have been captured in many evocative scenes of the era, comprising those at stations, both main line and smaller local facilities, engine sheds and from the lineside. The photographs are accompanied by well-researched and informative captions. The preservation movement was born in the Southern Region and hopefully this collection of images helps remind everyone that the steam locomotives left are worthy of continued interest as representatives of a bygone age.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49505069138193,"sku":"GOR011431042","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49738574299409,"sku":"NGR9781912101238","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51528309440785,"sku":"GOR014317577","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1912101238.jpg?v=1751250958"},{"product_id":"south-yorkshire-railway-stations-book-peter-tuffrey-9781445601229","title":"South Yorkshire Railway Stations","description":"Well known South Yorkshire writer Peter Tuffrey has always wanted to live in a railway station - with the tracks still intact so that he could leisurely watch trains pass in the comfort on his own unique home. That in part, along with a conversation with pop artist Peter Blake who once lived in a railway station himself, has inspired Peter to amass a mine of information and a unique collection of pictures illustrating the many aspects of South Yorkshire railway station history. We not only see the unique grand architecture that stations once displayed, like those at Sheffield Victoria and Rotherham Masborough, but the armies of staff they once employed. Many staff are seen posing proudly with the stationmaster, on platforms or the rail tracks themselves. Other pictures show evacuees on the platform of Sheffield Victoria station, floods at Sheffield Midland, and the horrific pile up of carriages at the Hexthorpe platform. Being an illustrated A-Z book, it is one where the reader can pick it up at leisure and learn on each occasion some interesting facts or marvel at something in the illustrations. Sadly we see a number of stations being demolished, abandoned or lost in overgrowth.    Nevertheless this adds to our understanding of local history - the railways that once criss-crossed over South Yorkshire were quickly superseded by the advent of motorised transport.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49508360290577,"sku":"GOR007393852","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53143571366161,"sku":"GOR009015266","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1445601222.jpg?v=1760521827"},{"product_id":"west-yorkshire-railway-stations-book-peter-tuffrey-9781445603070","title":"West Yorkshire Railway Stations","description":"Well-known local history author Peter Tuffrey first became familiar with West Yorkshire railway stations when editing and publishing a smaller work on the subject in 1989. Now in 2011, and with the help of the internet, he believes it is time to augment and enlarge this information in a new book. One remarkable website he stumbled upon during his research and which helped him enormously was www.lostrailwayswestyorkshire.co.uk, run by an army of enthusiasts who have documented when lines were constructed, where they extended, what they included in terms of track layouts, bridges, signal boxes, stations etc., what has happened to them and what remains. He has also used two other sites: www.railwayramblers.org.uk and www.disused-stations.org.uk, both of which are maintained by the tireless and inspiring efforts of their various members. For illustrations Peter has used numerous picture postcards and the archives at the Yorkshire Post newspapers, as well as some noted railway photographers. This is the second of Peter's works on Yorkshire railway stations, as earlier in the year he produced a similar book on South Yorkshire railway stations.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49508364288273,"sku":"GOR009976514","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53183526830353,"sku":"GOR014795859","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1445603071.jpg?v=1760521867"},{"product_id":"150-years-of-doncaster-plant-works-book-peter-tuffrey-9781872062044","title":"150 Years of Doncaster Plant Works","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49508771365137,"sku":"GOR003955867","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49561292701969,"sku":"GOR006894317","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53555781632273,"sku":"GOR009741777","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1872062040.jpg?v=1750930938"},{"product_id":"cock-o-the-north-book-peter-tuffrey-9781781554364","title":"Cock O' the North","description":"In May 1934 a zenith of locomotive construction in the UK was reached when an enormous new locomotive entered traffic for the LNER Company. Bill Reed took the pictures during a number of visits to stations, sheds and to areas offering an attractive vantage point to shoot film. The engines have been pictured at various locations around the Western Region, ranging from; Barmouth and Aberystwyth in north west Wales to Whitland in the south west; Crewe and Wellington in the north east to London Paddington, Oxford and Princes Risborough in the south east. The places one would generally associate with the Western Region are also present and they comprise; Swindon (depot, station and works), Bristol, Exeter, Newton Abbot, Truro and Penzance.Bill has taken photographs of locomotives working on a number of branch lines around the Western Region and these are particularly evocative of the era. They also point to the future, in the form of the Beeching Report, when mass closures occurred eliminating these stations serving the local communities. The branch line stations featured are often deserted and the carriages partially empty.In some instances the stations would never serve many people, but others would lose passengers after the rise in motor car use in the wake of the Second World War. The W.R. attempted to entice passengers to some lines with diesel railcars, also reducing costs, and an example is seen in this collection at Kemble station. The G.W.R. had also tried this tactic with their own railcars and two have been captured at Worcester.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49514305028369,"sku":"GOR008428886","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53226004283665,"sku":"GOR010930949","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1781553017.jpg?v=1751420200"},{"product_id":"yorkshire-people-and-railways-book-peter-tuffrey-9781445605142","title":"Yorkshire People and Railways","description":"A look back in time to what life on the railways in Yorkshire was really like when steam was King.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49516301025553,"sku":"GOR006986848","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51391200657681,"sku":"NGR9781445605142","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53353024454929,"sku":"GOR007081322","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1445605147.jpg?v=1777714908"},{"product_id":"golden-age-of-yorkshire-railways-book-peter-tuffrey-9781912101726","title":"The Golden Age of Yorkshire Railways","description":"Using well over 200 pin sharp photographs and informative text, the book will feature many aspects of railway development in Yorkshire prior to the Grouping of railways in 1923 as well as the years afterwards, up to 1948, and the establishment of British Railways. One of the most noticeable changes, apparent throughout the towns and countryside, was the switch from steam to diesel traction. It transformed the character of the railways, not only in the replacement of locomotives, but also in the enormous upheaval of infrastructure. Bill Reed's photographs capture all of this. The sight of grimy steam locomotives on turntables, trundling along branch lines, pausing in sleepy stations, waiting to be watered or coaled, and on the scrap lines, is now only to be witnessed in photographic archives such as this. Bill took the pictures when it was a privilege, not to mention a rarity, to have a decent camera. He also took them at time when it was not frowned upon, like it is today, to be interested in railways, and take pictures of locomotives. It was only natural for young lads to have a desire to gaze at the vast, almost human engines with awe, because maybe their dads, granddads or even great granddads had been part of building or working them. Looking back now, it is a shame that more locomotives and more pieces of infrastructure were not saved. Yet the 1950s and '60s was not a time for nostalgia and reflection; it was one, supposedly, for moving forward and embracing the new. But for those of us with an interest in Britain's great industrial and transport heritage, we have people like Bill Reed to thank for giving us a glimpse into the last years of this extraordinary era.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49524498497809,"sku":"GOR005698497","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50837488501009,"sku":"GOR009996686","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/178155207X.jpg?v=1751025899"},{"product_id":"last-days-of-southern-steam-from-the-bill-reed-collection-book-peter-tuffrey-9781781554890","title":"The Last Days of Southern Steam from the Bill Reed Collection","description":"This album of 160 colour photographs was taken in the Southern Region of B.R., which was formerly the lines constituting the Southern Railway. Few in the 1970s could have foreseen that within a decade, the Tory Government would bring the industry to its knees, sparking a period of mass unemployment and social unrest, the effects of which still endure today. To many, the spontaneous celebrations following the announcement of Lady Thatcher's death in April 2013 came as no surprise. In South Yorkshire People and Coal, acclaimed local historian Peter Tuffrey presents an illustrated history of the mining industry in South Yorkshire, showing vividly the extent to which communities relied upon coal, and their desperation when the industry was taken from them. Pit sinkings, strikes, pickets, clashes with police, record hauls, tragedies, underground scenes, closures and redevelopment schemes are all recorded here as part of South Yorkshire's coal mining story. Once the pride of British industry, coal mining is now chiefly remembered for the gallant struggle of the miners to save their jobs and, therefore, their communities. South Yorkshire People and Coal is a tribute to their brave fight.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49527256547601,"sku":"GOR005698496","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1781550603.jpg?v=1751377933"},{"product_id":"gresley-s-d49s-book-peter-tuffrey-9781914227257","title":"Gresley's D49s","description":"Gresley's D49s follows the career of this important class which ran in service between 1927 and 1961. He can't explain why, but it all began over thirty years ago when he bought a glass plate photographic collection which depicted, with pin sharp clarity, numerous Doncaster trams.  From there he moved on to collecting tram crash postcards and helped Sheffield author Brian Hinchliffe produce a small tram crash booklet in 1990.  Since that time Peter has collected many more tram crash pictures. Why the fascination with crashes? That's unexplainable too.  But disasters hold people's fascination whether they involve aeroplanes, fires, explosions etc. So, offering no plausible rational explanations or excuses, this book boldly illustrates British and Foreign tram crashes from the late nineteenth century to the present day. In certain instances trams have also fallen victim of enemy aerial action and Peter has felt that dramatic pictures of those incidents has warranted them being included here. But, regardless of whether the reader is interested in trams, or disasters of any type, this book also has a wealth of interest for those fascinated by the changing transport scene over the last century.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49541196546321,"sku":"GOR007073247","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52842442588433,"sku":"GOR009787581","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/178155210X.jpg?v=1750723292"},{"product_id":"doncaster-district-pubs-book-peter-tuffrey-9781445601199","title":"Doncaster District Pubs","description":"In both Doncaster District Pubs and the previously published Doncaster Pubs, Peter Tuffrey enlists the help of friends James Edward Day, Eric Braim and Geoff Elvin, and offers the reader as much information about Doncaster's pubs as possible: the earliest located reference; opening, rebuilding, alteration and demolition dates. He also details interesting facts about the pubs and the landlords who ran them. The accompanying illustrations have come from many sources and include architectural drawings as well as photographs from glass plates and picture postcards. Peter's favourite pub picture is the one of the Star Inn at Conisbrough. It is an incredibly sharp and well composed picture and betrays nothing of what was to happen several years later. It is a remarkable collection of rare colour images that document our railway heritage. Noted railway photographer Bill Reed shows his pin-sharp colour pictures of the last days of Scottish steam for the first time in this lavish, 160 page, hardback book. Bill, now 79, Nottingham-born and an ex loco driver, took colour slides on his many journeys north of the border in late 1950s and early 1960s. In some cases Scotland was the only area operating the once famous Gresley A4 locomotives and Bill wasted no time in capturing them on their last duties. The pictures illustrate steam locomotives trundling along many of the branch lines now long gone; waiting in sleepy stations, long abandoned; as well as pausing on shed or dumped on scrap lines, awaiting their ultimate fate. Bill had access to most areas to take pictures and was not hampered by restrictions and regulations as he would be today. This is much to the reader's advantage as we see shots that would normally be difficult to obtain.He also illustrates how complicated and labour intensive it was operating a steam loco; the vast coal hoppers and water tanks provide examples of this testimony. For easy reference, the book is set out in a simple A-Z format starting with Aberdeen and finishing at Tyndrum Upper station. Noted locations are featured in-between these points, including all the Edinburgh and Glasgow sheds as well as Connel Ferry, Gleneagles, Inverurie and many more. Bill has marvellously captured the post Second World War atmosphere on Scottish railways. If he had his time again he says he would have taken a lot more pictures. But that is no matter, we have enough here to remind us quite clearly what it was like during the last days of Scottish steam.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49548725453073,"sku":"GOR008068652","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49563895202065,"sku":"GOR007463785","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0957295170.jpg?v=1751425042"},{"product_id":"last-years-of-yorkshire-steam-book-peter-tuffrey-9780993344749","title":"The Last Years of Yorkshire Steam","description":"The book features steam locomotives trundling along branch lines all around the county and travelling at speed on main lines in Yorkshire from the late 1940s to the early 1970s. Under a number of interesting chapter headings such as 'Views from the Lineside', 'Staff', 'Crashes', 'On Shed and Works' and 'Preserved Railways and Railway Stations', we see the many different ways Yorkshire people have been involved with railways, particularly in the days of steam. Trawling through literally thousands of newspapers cuttings from the Sheffield Star and Sheffield Telegraph pub files he has noted subjects and incidents ranging from pub closures to murders, from retirements to renovations and from pub bombings to pub ghosts. Many of Sheffield's pubs were built to coincide with the growth of the city's steel industry and to slake the thirsts of its workers. These pubs are pictured and documented in decline or just before demolition and it is a pity more were not saved to illustrate the city's rich industrial heritage. We see landlords, landladies and regulars posing outside and it just goes to show how important pubs were in terraced communities. It stands on the Great North Road, superseded by the A1, the primary route for all traffic from London to Edinburgh, and due to its strategic geographical importance it emerged as an industrial centre in the mid-nineteenth century. Beneath the town lies a huge coal seam and it was this that prompted Doncaster's exponential population growth. In the early part of the twentieth century Doncaster became one of the largest coal-mining areas in the country, with the industry becoming one of the most significant local employers. However, along with many other areas, a large number of mining jobs were lost in the mid-1980s, and several pits closed. Today, coal mining has been eliminated with no collieries surviving. The demise of coal saw a domino effect that led to the removal of many other tertiary industries.In recent years, however, the city's fortunes have changed. Its centre has undergone redevelopment including the construction of an Education City campus, currently the largest education investment of its kind in the UK. The Doncaster Lakeside, incorporating Doncaster Rovers at the Keepmoat Stadium, is a massive new development and the ever-popular 'Dome', opened in 1989 by Princess Diana, contains a state of the art swimming pool, gym and ice rink. The Frenchgate Centre, a shopping centre and transport interchange, has also been extended to connect with the railway station and bus station. The Waterdale area of the town centre is currently undergoing rejuvenation, with a new theatre (known as CAST), new civic offices and a new public square already having been completed, on part of the site of the old Waterdale car park. These changes, and many more, are all documented in Peter Tuffrey's fascinating collection of old and new photographs of Doncaster.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49565036347665,"sku":"GOR009278075","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":50944305627409,"sku":"NGR9781445654522","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53157619761425,"sku":"GOR014787834","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1445654520.jpg?v=1763222996"},{"product_id":"askern-and-norton-book-peter-tuffrey-9780752410449","title":"Askern and Norton","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49570426650897,"sku":"GOR001987729","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/075241044X.jpg?v=1751169649"},{"product_id":"last-years-of-west-midlands-steam-book-peter-tuffrey-9781914227011","title":"The Last Years of West Midlands Steam","description":"Bringing together around 5,000 square miles of land, the West Midlands region boasted a diverse system of railways. Several cities in the area appear: Birmingham, Coventry, Hereford, Lichfield, Stoke-on-Trent, Wolverhampton and Worcester.  There are also a number of large towns included, such as: Burton-upon-Trent, Dudley, Kidderminster, Leamington Spa, Nuneaton, Rugby, Shrewsbury, Stafford, Stourbridge, Tamworth, Uttoxeter, etc. With lines formerly operated by the London Midland \u0026amp; Scottish Railway and Great Western Railway, many locomotives of these companies are present, alongside the Standard Classes of British Railways. With a rich industrial heritage in the region, a number of privately owned locomotives appear at work on several sites, such as breweries and collieries. The West Midlands was a bustling and vibrant place for steam enthusiasts to observe and record locomotives at work. In doing so, a lost era has been captured and this collection has been assembled to celebrate those bygone days.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49572094542097,"sku":"GOR012384085","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49742507770129,"sku":"NGR9781914227011","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53080110924049,"sku":"GOR014732867","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1914227018.jpg?v=1750770342"},{"product_id":"last-years-of-steam-in-the-north-east-book-peter-tuffrey-9781912101917","title":"The Last Years of Steam in the North East","description":"The book contains 270 superb colour and black and white photographs of steam locomotives working in and around the North East. Buildings of all sizes and descriptions  -  some having only existed for a relatively short time  -  quickly became redundant and have struggled for survival or an alternative use since the demise. In the heavy industrial areas of West Yorkshire particularly Bradford and Leeds, there was a great need for entertainment. And in some ways it was only natural that the new film industry should give rise to purpose-built cinemas across the entire region. Although theatre-going declined with the growth of the cinemas, it is pleasing to note that live theatre is still very much alive today in a number of the towns and cities covered here. The various developments of screen and stage in West Yorkshire have been admirably captured over the years by the Yorkshire Post's able photographers and featured in this book. Using a simple A to Z format Peter Tuffrey has made it quick and easy to examine the history - and in some cases find a picture  -  of a favourite cinema or theatre.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49575734477073,"sku":"GOR006337154","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50837282324753,"sku":"GOR010652772","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51594811506961,"sku":"GOR009408457","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1781552061.jpg?v=1751312100"},{"product_id":"scottish-steam-1948-1967-book-peter-tuffrey-9781914227219","title":"Scottish Steam 1948-1967","description":"Comprising one-third of the land mass of mainland Britain, Scotland provided a diverse background for railway photographers to record the end of steam. As dieselisation radiated northward from Southern England, the country became a refuge for locomotives and many enthusiasts rushed with their cameras to record the demise of a great period in British history. Scottish Steam 1948-1967 presents this period using nearly 250 superb colour and black-and-white images. The focus is on the various locomotives serving under BR at this time. These ranged from old pre-Grouping locomotives still in service, to the many LNER and LMSR designs introduced to modernise the respective motive power stocks after 1923. After Nationalisation, many of the BR Standard Class varieties saw use in Scotland, whilst heavier freight duties were handled by ex-War Department ‘Austerity’ 2-8-0s that were brought into service under BR from the many war surplus engines. The locomotives have been pictured at locations across Scotland. From the cities of Edinburgh and Glasgow – including their environs – to places on the main lines radiating southward, such as Burnmouth and Beattock. Several sites on the Waverley route are included, in addition to the Ayrshire coast. Northward, Stirling, Alloa, Dundee, Aberdeen, Perth, etc., are featured, as is the West Highland and far north of Scotland – Thurso and Wick. The images have been taken at the lineside, stations, sheds, workshops and industrial locations. The book offers a fascinating record of the end of steam in Scotland.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49576320762129,"sku":"GOR012849108","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49745861706001,"sku":"NGR9781914227219","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1914227212.jpg?v=1751446410"},{"product_id":"gresley-s-a3s-book-peter-tuffrey-9780993344763","title":"Gresley's A3s","description":"Nigel Gresley built his Pacific class of locomotives to deal with increasing demands from passenger traffic. Some Pacifics started as Class A1s but were eventually rebuilt to Class A3 specifications. Others were built as A3s from the outset. Suffice to say the A3s underwent a number of significant alterations during their lifetime extending from 1922 to the mid 1960s. Gresley's A3s documents many members of the class in well-researched captions. These are set against photographs which appear in a chronological sequence. We learn how many different tenders were coupled to a locomotive; how they were converted from right hand to left hand drive; the many colour schemes employed; and latterly how trough deflectors were fitted to a number of engines. A finale to book is a section on the Flying Scotsman - a world-renowned engine that started as an A1 but was subsequently converted to A3. The engine has recently undergone a major overhaul and brought crowds out in their thousands when it appeared on an inaugural run. This is surely testament to the longevity of Gresley's great locomotives. - Many of these great locomotives were built and maintained in Yorkshire at Doncaster Works - A large number of colour photographs not hitherto seen previously - Evocative black and white pictures - The locomotives are seen all along the East Coast Main line, travelling on Scottish routes and the old Great Central line hauling many named trains. They are also depicted on shed and in works. - A lavish and aptly sized book that does justice to these much revered and sadly missed locomotives","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49581572817169,"sku":"GOR008860818","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49730306539793,"sku":"NGR9780993344763","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51346844909841,"sku":"GOR014232539","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0993344763.jpg?v=1751431860"},{"product_id":"bawtry-rossington-tickhill-and-wadworth-book-peter-tuffrey-9780752444543","title":"Bawtry, Rossington, Tickhill and Wadworth","description":"A collection of more than 200 archive photographs that traces the ways in which Bawtry, Rossington, Tickhill and Wadworth have changed.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49582746108177,"sku":"GOR006875831","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53157078597905,"sku":"GOR013011600","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0752444549.jpg?v=1750978709"},{"product_id":"last-days-of-steam-in-nottinghamshire-book-peter-tuffrey-9781445603063","title":"The Last Days of Steam in Nottinghamshire","description":"This fascinating selection of evocative railway photographs will delight railway enthusiasts and all those who remember the days of steam. The book shows railways in and around Nottingham in the twilight years of steam, capturing areas which have long gone and are now completely redeveloped. The bulk of this wonderful collection has been drawn from the archives of Bill Reed, whose interest in railways goes back to his early childhood when his mother used to take him to her sister's in Hucknall, travelling on Sentinel Steam Railcars. Growing up in Bulwell, Bill was always aware of the rail services with such a complicated network and so many stations. When he left school the only job he could fi nd on the railways was as a messenger lad at Nottingham Victoria station. He spent his lunch hours on the station's platforms where he met local enthusiast Freddie Guildford, who encouraged him to take photographs and showed him how to develop films and make prints.  Fortunately Bill's wife Mary shares his interest in railway photography. Today, when possible, they both photograph main line steam.  According to Bill: 'It is a real treat to see the locomotives in such fine condition, bringing back memories, though they were seldom so clean and shining in my early days.'","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49585284350225,"sku":"GOR006128858","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53193486565649,"sku":"GOR011778852","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1445603063.jpg?v=1763225605"},{"product_id":"leeds-changing-places-book-peter-tuffrey-9781912101641","title":"Leeds: Changing Places","description":"Modern Leeds is a vibrant, bustling city. Moving with the times has meant the appearance of the city is constantly evolving. Leeds: Changing Places is a fascinating, photographic insight which charts these changes over the last 100 years, by comparing the past with the present.  In the old photographs, Leeds is awash with bold Victorian buildings reflecting Baroque, Gothic and Classical influences. Electric trams weaved their way along the main thoroughfares. Traders, full of character, proudly displayed their varied, and often niche goods, for all to see. The impressive engine was P2 Class no. 2001 Cock o' the North and it was painstakingly erected to the designs of eminent locomotive engineer H.N. Gresley (later Sir) at the company's sprawling Doncaster Works.Cock o' the North was equipped with number of new and experimental features and this created quite a stir in the highly critical railway world and with the wider general public. These features included; Kylala-Chapelon (Kylchap) double blastpipe and chimney, Lentz poppet valves and rotary cam valve gear, A.C.F.I feedwater heater, V-shaped cab front, streamlined steam passages and a 50 sq. ft firebox grate area. No. 2001 also had a 2-8-2 or 'Mikado' wheel arrangement and, while it was not the first engine in Britain to have such configuration (the Gresley P1 Class locomotives of 1925 were the pioneers), Cock o' the North was the first engine intended for use on express passenger traffic to be built as a 'Mikado'.This book is the first one to feature the entire history of Cock o' the North as a single subject.With detailed research and a remarkable selection of photographs it examines and illustrates many aspects of the locomotive including: the name derivation, construction, trial runs, trial tests, the controversial rebuilding by Gresley's successor, Edward Thompson, the involvement in the Balby Bridge crash, and final withdrawal from service.Locomotive developments at home and abroad during the first half of the 20th century are also chartered as well as Nigel Gresley's rise from Great Northern Railway Company Locomotive Superintendent to LNER Chief Mechanical Engineer. Having understood Gresley's motivation behind building the locomotive, readers are then armed with enough information to ask themselves whether his bold experiment of building the largest steam passenger locomotive Britain has ever seen was a success and achieved the intentions of its creator.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49587478626577,"sku":"GOR011033860","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53515348312337,"sku":"GOR014953687","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1781556830.jpg?v=1751091063"},{"product_id":"central-doncaster-book-peter-tuffrey-9780752430164","title":"Central Doncaster","description":"This book is part of the Images of England series, which uses old photographs and archived images to show the history of various local areas in England, through their streets, shops, pubs, and people.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49588753826065,"sku":"GOR006041817","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0752430165.jpg?v=1751075199"},{"product_id":"early-tramways-of-yorkshire-book-peter-tuffrey-9781781553497","title":"Early Tramways of  Yorkshire","description":"It has often been said that the world was horse-drawn before the introduction of electric tramways. The A3 Class and A4 Class Pacifics were breaking records and creating headlines across the globe when the first V2 appeared in 1936. The class was derived from the A3 and inherited many characteristics, such as power, speed and reliability. Employed on both express freight and passenger trains, the V2s soon joined the ranks of their illustrious forebears with both footplatemen and enthusiasts alike. Gresley's V2s documents the vast majority of the 184 locomotives built through evocative colour and black and white images, alongside well-researched captions. The photographs capture the V2s at work along the East Coast Main Line and elsewhere, such as the ex-Great Central Railway main line and into Scotland. Engines are seen from the lineside, in stations and on shed. A short section celebrates the only preserved V2, no. 4771 Green Arrow. A fair proportion of East Yorkshire stations were designed by G. T. Some have even become listed buildings affording future generations a glimpse into the splendour of Victorian railway station architecture. A sizeable batch of pictures was provided by Alan Young and Nick Catford  -  two stalwarts of the Disused Stations website. These include many taken by the late John Mann. Naturally, stations were lost with Beeching's closure of branch lines and their fate then became uncertain. Some have survived intact, others been altered sensitively or rendered completely unrecognisable, and the remainder have been lost completely and their sites redeveloped. In this book numbering over 220 images we see them illustrated in both their glory and their decline.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49604873453841,"sku":"GOR013759135","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49849662112017,"sku":"GOR006437669","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51503513239825,"sku":"GOR011247854","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1445605023.jpg?v=1777715404"},{"product_id":"doncaster-rovers-football-club-100-greats-book-peter-tuffrey-9780752427072","title":"Doncaster Rovers Football Club: 100 Greats","description":"A history of Doncaster Rovers Football Club","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49612072976657,"sku":"GOR002656707","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50933719073041,"sku":"GOR006333236","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0752427075.jpg?v=1751394261"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/de-ch\/collections\/autor-buecher-von-peter-tuffrey.oembed?page=4","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
