Underpinning his life is the extraordinary story of the Sitwell family, of Sachie's father, the eccentric, machiavellian Sir George, his mother, the tragic Lady Ida, and their lives in their vast and haunted ancestral home, Renishaw Hall in Derbyshire and their medieval castle in Tuscany. Sarah Bradford paints an extraordinary portrait of a woman riddled with contradictions: kind, considerate, proud, loyal and loving, yet also supremely selfish, manipulative and greedy. Drawing on remarkable new testimony from those closest to Jackie, "America's Queen" follows her from her rigid, bleak childhood to the glorious glamour and complication of life as Kennedy's wife, to the even more glamorous but ultimately poisonous marriage to Onassis, to the final serenity of her years as a New York publishing editor. It reveals a character of greater massiveness than the hills, of a more serene beauty than the stars, of sweeter fragrance than the flowers, higher than the heavens in sublimity and deeper than the seas in mystery. As good Jean Paul has eloquently said, It concerns Him who, being the holiest among the mighty, and the mightiest among the holy, lifted with His pierced hands empires off their hinges, turned the stream of centuries out of its channels, and still governs the ages.Christ in history is undoubtedly more marvelous than Christ in Galilee; but to understand His relation to all subsequent time, and to the course of human events, His brief earthly career, and briefer ministry must be carefully studied and thoroughly mastered. Since His visible presence faded from human sight, he has swayed a worldwide scepter, and has wrought more stupendous miracles than He performed in Syria. There and then He merely opened the eyes of a few blind men, restored to health some who were sick, fed occasionally a hungry crowd, and raised from among the dead an inconsiderable number to life; but since His ascension He has removed from nations the veil of mental darkness, has imparted moral health to entire communities, has satisfied the longings of millions for the imperishable bread, and has rescued tribes, races, and peoples from the dreariness of spiritual death.
As her biographer Sarah H. Bradford mentions, Harriet Tubman is at par with biggest names like Jeanne D'Arc, Grace Darling, and Florence Nightingale in terms of her resilience, courage and do-or-die dedication in liberating her people from the bondages of slavery. Tubman who was herself born into slavery in Maryland in 1822 took over the responsibility of helping and guiding other slaves to freedom after her own escape to Philadelphia in 1849. Traveling by night and in extreme secrecy, Tubman never lost a passenger. When the Civil War began, Tubman worked for the Union Army, first as a cook and nurse, and then as an armed scout and spy. She was the first woman to lead an armed expedition in the war and to guide the raid at Combahee Ferry, which liberated more than 700 slaves. Excerpt: The whip was in sight on the mantel-piece, as a reminder of what was to be expected if the work was not done well. Harriet fixed the furniture as she was told to do, and swept with all her strength, raising a tremendous dust. The moment she had finished sweeping, she took her dusting cloth, and wiped everything so you could see your face in 'em, de shone so, in haste to go and set the table for breakfast, and do her other work. The dust which she had set flying only settled down again on chairs, tables, and the piano. Miss Susan came in and looked around. (Scenes in the Life of Harriet Tubman) Sarah H. Bradford (1818-1912) was an American writer, historian and one of the first American women writers to specialize in children's literature, predating better-known writers such as Louisa May Alcott. Bradford was also a very close friend of Tubman and a contemporary of Harriet Beecher Stowe, the author of Uncle Tom's Cabin.
One of America's most important women, Harriet Tubman was a former slave who led a heroic struggle more bravely and more successfully than any other to liberate African-Americans from slavery.
This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Once free, she brought refugees from slavery in Maryland to freedom in Canada. In the fall of 1851, Tubman returned for the first time since her escape to find her husband, John. She once declared I had reasoned this out in my mind; there was one of two things I had a right to - liberty or death; if I could not have one, I would have the other; for no man should take me alive; I should fight for my liberty as song as my strength lasted, and when the time came for me to go, the Lord would let them take me. She and uncounted others crossed the Suspension Bridge in Buffalo into Canada to set themselves free. Names and details about most freedom seekers remain unknown. Their safety lay in secrecy. Tubman personally let about 70 people to freedom.
After reaching Philadelphia, Tubman began thinking of her family. Bradford, of Geneva, with the single object of furnishing some help to the subject of the memoir. Harriet Tubman's services and sufferings during the rebellion, which are acknowledged in the letters of Gen. Saxton, and others, it was thought by many, would justify the bestowment of a pension by the Government. But the difficulties in the way of procuring such relief, suggested other methods, and finally the present one. The narrative was prepared on the eve of the author's departure for Europe, where she still remains. It makes no claim whatever to literary merit. Her hope was merely that the considerably numerous public already in part acquainted with Harriet's story, would furnish purchasers enough to secure a little fund for the relief of this remarkable woman. Outside that circle she did not suppose the memoir was likely to meet with much if any sale. In furtherance of the same benevolent scheme, and in order to secure the whole avails of the work for Harriet's benefit, a subscription has been raised more than sufficient to defray the entire cost of publication. This has been effected by the generous exertions of Wm. G. Wise, Esq., of this city. The whole amount was contributed by citizens of Auburn, with the exception of two liberal subscriptions by Gerrit Smith, Esq., and Mr. Wendell Phillips. Mr. Wise has also consented, at Mrs. Bradford's request, to act as trustee for Harriet; and will receive, invest, and apply, for her benefit, whatever may accrue from the sale of this book. The spirited wood-cut likeness of Harriet, in her costume as scout, was furnished by the kindness of Mr. J. C. Darby, of this city.
harriet-tubman-of-the-underground-railroad-abolitionist-civil-war-scout-civil-ri-book-sarah-h-bradford-9781782829270
Harriet Tubman of the Underground Railroad-Abolitionist, Civil War Scout, Civil Rights Activist

The life of an African-American icon

Harriet Tubman (born in slavery, Araminta Ross in Maryland in 1822) was a remarkable abolitionist and political activist. She escaped from captivity and subsequently undertook thirteen missions on the 'Underground Railroad', risking capture and bondage, to rescue approximately 70 people from their slave-masters. After the introduction of the Fugitive Slave Act in 1850 she guided her charges all the way to Canada to establish them in new lives there. During the American Civil War Harriet volunteered to be a cook and nurse. Such was her courage and commitment to the cause of liberty, that she then became a scout and spy for the Union Army. Notably she guided the raid at Combahee Ferry which liberated hundreds of slaves.
After reaching Philadelphia, Tubman began thinking of her family.
