Who were Vienna’s Jews, how did they react and respond to Nazism, and why? Drawing upon the voices of the individuals and families who lived during this time, together with new archival documentation, Ilana Offenberger reconstructs the daily lives of Vienna’s Jews from Anschluss in March 1938 through the entire Nazi occupation and the eventual dissolution of the Jewish community of Vienna. Offenberger explains how and why over two-thirds of the Jewish community emigrated from the country, while one-third remained trapped. A vivid picture emerges of the co-dependent relationship this community developed with their German masters, and the false hope they maintained until the bitter end. The Germans murdered close to one third of Vienna’s Jewish population in the “final solution” and their family members who escaped the Reich before 1941 chose never to return; they remained dispersed across the world. Thisis not a triumphant history. Although the overwhelming majority survived the Holocaust, the Jewish community that once existed was destroyed.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51060598243601,"sku":"NIN9783319841441","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52481608548625,"sku":"NLS9783319841441","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3319841440.jpg?v=1751127014"},{"product_id":"indonesian-genocide-of-1965-book-katharine-mcgregor-9783319714547","title":"The Indonesian Genocide of 1965","description":"This collection of essays by Indonesian and foreign contributors offers new and highly original analyses of the mass violence in Indonesia which began in 1965 and its aftermath. The Great Crime served as the first systematic documentation of the Armenian Genocide, introducing the memoir of an Ottoman bureaucrat that contained handwritten copies of approximately 52 Ottoman documents, including direct orders to kill Armenians. It therefore holds immense historical significance, as it provides irrefutable evidence of the Armenian Genocide using original Ottoman documents. In 1983, the Turkish government published a book claiming that Andonian’s work was fraudulent by presenting three arguments: 1. That the Ottoman bureaucrat named did not exist; 2. A non-existent person cannot have a memoir and, if it exists, you must show the handwritten manuscripts; 3. The allegedly fake telegrams have 12 different reasons for their inauthenticity. Based on these, Andonian’s book and the official Ottoman documents it contained were discredited as a historical source. Taner Akçam's previous book with Palgrave Macmillan, Killing Orders, was a response to the Turkish government’s attempt to discredit Andonian’s book and documents, and rehabilitated their status as valuable materials in the study of the Armenian Genocide. The Great Crime stands as an immortal testament to historical truth, and this version of it includes a detailed preface written by Akçam, incorporating his new findings and information that has come to light since the publication of Killing Orders, along with additional explanatory notes.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52418483257617,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":52418484044049,"sku":"NGR9783031972300","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}]},{"product_id":"jewish-resistance-to-romanianization-1940-44-book-s-ionescu-9781349503513","title":"Jewish Resistance to 'Romanianization', 1940-44","description":"Ionescu examines the process of economic Romanianization of Bucharest during the Antonescu regime that targeted the property, jobs, and businesses of local Jews and Roma\/Gypsies and their legal resistance strategies to such an unjust policy.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52454542311697,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52454542934289,"sku":"NLS9781349503513","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781349503513.jpg?v=1759371478"},{"product_id":"female-administrators-of-the-third-reich-book-rachel-century-9781137548924","title":"Female Administrators of the Third Reich","description":"This book compares female administrators who specifically chose to serve the Nazi cause in voluntary roles with those who took on such work as a progression of established careers. Under the Nazi regime, secretaries, SS-Helferinnen (female auxiliaries for the SS) and Nachrichtenhelferinnen des Heeres (female auxiliaries for the army) held similar jobs: taking dictation, answering telephones, sending telegrams. Yet their backgrounds and degree of commitment to Nazi ideology differed markedly. The author explores their motivations and what they knew about the true nature of their work. These women had access to information about the administration of the Holocaust and are a relatively untapped resource. Their recollections shed light on the lives, love lives, and work of their superiors, and the tasks that contributed to the displacement, deportation and death of millions. The question of how gender intersected with Nazism, repression, atrocity and genocide forms the conceptual thread ofthis book.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52472093770001,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52472094327057,"sku":"NLS9781137548924","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781137548924.jpg?v=1759837414"},{"product_id":"agency-and-the-holocaust-book-thomas-khne-9783030390006","title":"Agency and the Holocaust","description":"The book assembles case studies on the human dimension of the Holocaust as illuminated in the academic work of preeminent Holocaust scholar Deborah Dwork, the founding director of the Strassler Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies, home of the first doctoral program focusing solely on the Holocaust and other genocides.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52484262265105,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52484263411985,"sku":"NLS9783030390006","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783030390006.jpg?v=1759856017"},{"product_id":"united-nations-and-genocide-book-deborah-mayersen-9781137484482","title":"The United Nations and Genocide","description":"The Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide was the first human rights treaty adopted by the United Nations, reflecting the global commitment to 'never again' in the wake of the Holocaust. It argues that the ECCC should be considered an example of illiberal transitional justice, where the language of procedure is strongly adhered to but political considerations often rule in reality. The Cambodian government spent nearly two decades addressing the Khmer Rouge past, and shaping its preferred narrative, before the involvement of the United Nations. It was a further six years of negotiations between the Cambodian government and the United Nations that determined the unique hybrid structure of the ECCC. Over more than a decade in operation, and with three people convicted, the ECCC has not contributed to the positive goals expected of transitional justice mechanisms. Through the Cambodian example, this book challenges existing assumptions and analysesof transitional justice to create a more nuanced understanding of how and why transitional justice mechanisms are employed.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52677341020433,"sku":"NLS9783030047825","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52760345968913,"sku":"NIN9783030047825","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783030047825.jpg?v=1762305843"},{"product_id":"transgenerational-consequences-of-the-armenian-genocide-book-anthonie-holslag-9783030098780","title":"The Transgenerational Consequences of the Armenian Genocide","description":"This book brings together the Armenian Genocide process and its transgenerational outcome, which are often juxtaposed in existing scholarship, to ask how the Armenian Genocide is conceptualized and placed within diasporic communities. In an original contribution to genocide studies, Themistocles Kritikakos examines the enduring legacies of the Armenian, Greek, and Assyrian genocides in the late Ottoman Empire (1914–1923). This book presents the first comprehensive comparative analysis of their efforts to achieve genocide recognition in Australia, advancing our understanding of the Ottoman genocidal campaign and its long-term consequences. Australians witnessed and reported the atrocities and suffering, and provided humanitarian support to survivors between 1915 and 1930. Yet Australian national narratives of reconciliation with Turkey around the Gallipoli Campaign (1915) are in persistent tension with the recognition efforts. Drawing from oral interviews with descendants of survivors and research in memory and genocide studies, the book explores the intergenerational effects of silence and memories of violence and displacement within families and communities in the diaspora. It examines commemorative practices, sites of memory, and intercommunal coalition-building. Kritikakos sheds new light on how individuals, families, and communities process and negotiate traumatic experiences across time and place.
