Anglican Quilt - Resolving the Anglican crisis over homosexuality by Robert Van De Weyer
This book offers a detailed plan for resolving the present crisis over homosexuality in the Anglican Church, prompted by the appointment of openly gay bishops in USA and England, and the blessing of a gay partnership in Canada. Robert Van de Weyer offers proposals both for world-wide Anglicanism and for the Church of England. Tracing the roots of the crisis back to the foundations of Anglicanism over four centuries ago, he shows why ancient divisions have grown wider in recent decades. He argues that the two sides now need separate episcopal arrangements-yet both sides have mush to gain by remaining together in a single body.
A very important contributionGeorge Carey, former Archbishop of Canterbury There is much in it to admire...I have no ready alternative to offer. John Habgood, former Archbishop of York It should be read by everybody who cares about the future of the Anglican Church...an alternative strategy to schism that could prevent the Anglican Church from committing suicide. Nicholas Stacey, clergyman and former deputy director of Oxfam The homosexual issue has exposed deep fault lines within Anglicanism. The author analyses these, and offers solutions that are far preferable to schism and strife. William Frend, retired Professor of Ecclesiastical History at Glasgow University I find it both persuasive and stimulating. Anthony Howard, Times columnist and commentator on Church of England affairs Stimulating, controversial, and full of good sense, as I would expect. Jack Nicholls, Bishop of Sheffield Your thoughts will be shared with the Commission. Robin Eames, Archbishop of Armagh and chairman of the Eames Commission
Robert Van de Weyer is a priest in the Church of England, and has ministered in a small village near Cambridge since 1982. He was warden of the Little Gidding Community from 1977 until 1994. He was a university lecturer in economics for twenty years, and is now a tutor in philosophy. He has written over fifty books on theology, world religions, philosophy, church history and economics. His first book, Guru Jesus, told the story of his life as a hippy in the 1960s, and his conversion to Christianity. A later book, Wickwyn, won the Winifred Mary Stanbrook book prize, and his Islam and the West, written in the wake of 9/11, was a global bestseller.
