William Thurston (1946-2012) was one of the great mathematicians of the twentieth century. DAVID GEBHARD(1927-1996) was Professor of Architectural History at the University of California, Santa Barbara and a bestselling author of books on American architecture and the building arts. His most celebrated books include architectural guides to Los Angeles, the San Francisco Bay Area, Iowa, and Minnesota.
