Art Beyond the West by Michael Kampen-O'riley

For Non-Western Art, Humanities, or Culture and Religion courses. Differing from the traditional Non-Western art study, this one-volume review is more systematic and detailed in the establishment of cultural and ideological contexts and provides a link between the philosophy behind the piece and its appearance or style. The text goes beyond the mere description of style to show how style works in concert with the cultural context to create meaning in art. The text also provides students with an efficient and workable educational tool with which to study art from nearly two thirds of the world.

Michael Kampen O'Riley gained his Ph.D. in the History of Art from the University of Pennsylvania and worked at Yale University with George Kubler on the Tikal Project Reports. He received a Fulbright faculty exchange scholarship to teach at the University of Stockholm and together with staff from the Charlotte Observer newspaper, the Pulizter Prize for public service. A dedicated educator, he has taught for many years specializing in non-Western art history and is the author of The Sculptures of El Tajin, Veracruz Mexico.
