Aurelia And Other Writings by Gerald De Nerval
Admired by both Proust and Breton, this nineteenth century book was also the favourite of artist Joseph Cornell. An account of the author's passion for an actress and subsequent descent into madness, AURELIA is a document of dreams, obsessions, and insanity. One of the original bohemians, Nerval was well known in his day for parading a lobster on a blue ribbon through the gardens of the Palais-Royal, and for his suicide (1855), hanging from an apron string he called the garter of the Queen of Sheba.
Poet, storyteller, autobiographer, translator, and visionary, Gü¾Ž–”¼rard de Nerval (1808-55) explored the blurry boundaries between dream and reality, fact and fiction, imagination and madness in his groundbreaking writings. Nerval was a pioneering modernist, a precursor of the French Symbolists, and a vital influence on writers such as Marcel Proust, Andrü¾Ž–”¼ Breton, and Antonin Artaud. His works include Voyage en Orient ( Journey to the Orient), Sylvie - which Umberto Eco deemed a masterpiece, Les Filles du Feu (The Daughters of Fire), Les Illuminü¾Ž–”¼s (The Illuminati), and Aurü¾Ž–”¼lia - which opens with Dream is a second life. Richard Sieburth's translations include Gü¾Ž–”¼rard de Nerval's Selected Writings, Friedrich Hü¾¦˜¼lderlin's Hymns and Fragments, Walter Benjamin's Moscow Diary, Henri Michaux's Emergences/ Resurgences and Stroke by Stroke, Gü¾Ž–”¼rard de Nerval's The Salt Smugglers, Michel Leiris' Nights as Day, Days as Night, and Gershom Scholem's The Fullness of Time: Poems. His edition of Nerval's Selected Writings won the 2000 PEN/Book-of-the-Month-Club Translation Prize. His recent translation of Maurice Scü¾Ž†”¼ve's Dü¾Ž–”¼lie was a finalist for the PEN Translation Prize and the Weidenfeld Prize.
