A reissue of the biography of the eminent Victorian ornithologist, John Gould. A genius and a cad, well-known for his volumes of bird-paintings, he not only relied upon the unacknowledged loyalty and handiwork of his wife but upon that of many other artists, including the young Edward Lear.
Isabella Tree was born in 1964 and studied classics at London University. An accomplished traveller and freelance journalist, she writes for The Guardian and the Sunday Telegraph, amongst many others. She has written two other books, Sliced Iguana (Hamish Hamilton) and Islands in the Clouds (Lonely Planet).
