Colin Meads by Brian Turner
Colin Meads is one of the greatest rugby players in New Zealand. Even before he was voted New Zealand's Rugby Player of the Century, Meads had already attained living legend status in New Zealand. Here, he dips back into his playing career and offers comparisons with the modern game. It becomes a social commentary - how professionalism has changed the face of rugby forever, and how the modern player has taken up the challenge. And, indeed, the burden of performing in the all-consuming black jersey. There is also a great love story in Mead's life, Verna, his wife of 40 years.
Brian Turner is one of New Zealand's most gifted writers. As well as books of poetry, he has also written a number of sports books, including three on cricket with his brother Glenn - My Way; Opening Up and Lifting the Covers. In 1999 he collaborated with Josh Kronfeld on the best-selling rugby biography, On the Loose. His latest collection of poetry, Taking Off, is about to be published by Victoria University Press.
