He is a retired environmental scientist with a degree in plant physiology and a PhD in botany from North Carolina State University. He has long been fascinated by plant names and legend as a committed gardener. The Garden Writers Association awarded him the Quill & Trowel Award for his work A Contemplation Upon Flowers: Garden Plants in Myth and Literature.
