Donald R., I was born. Burgett was born in Detroit, Michigan, on April 5, 1925. My father was a Detroit cop, and my mother was a stay-at-home mom to three sons and one daughter. After failing to enlist in the military because I was too young, I dropped out of high school and worked as a carpenter. I volunteered for the paratroopers when I was eighteen years old. With A., I fought in Normandy, Holland, Bastogne, Austria, and Germany during the European War.
