The Diary by Samuel Pepys
FOR YOUR INSPIRATION------------------ENJOYMENT--------------EDIFICATION Most of my life has been dedicated to the ministry of music since an early age, when I had boundless energy. As a senior, I found that it was no longer possible for me to keep up the same pace. One day I became ill and could do nothing except sit in my recliner. Aside from my first diagnosed illness, both of my feet developed gout, and I was totally set-aside from any activities for a period of three months. It was during this time that I began to read the Word of God with more dedication than ever before. God had a purpose in giving me Time Out and it was during this time, that I realized my own mortality. The Lord began to guide me through His word, and there was a definite thesis to the scriptures that I felt impressed to study and write about. As my writing began to take form, there was urgency within me to use God's word to answer the questions of many Christians and sinners alike. What happens to man after death? Is there life after the grave? Four days after I began the writing of this book, my only sister passed from this life. The words that were written were used to provide comfort to my family, and to me. May the words of this book provide knowledge, comfort, and inspiration to follow Christ, to all who read it.
Samuel Pepys was born on 23 February 1633, the son of a London tailor. He graduated from Cambridge in 1654, and in 1655 he married Elizabeth St Michel. He started work for Sir Edward Montague, a relation who later became the 1st Earl of Sandwich, and through him first went to sea. Pepys later found work with the Navy Office, eventually rising to become Secretary of the Admiralty. He also became a JP, an MP and a Fellow of the Royal Society. In later life he was accused of being part of the anti-monarchist 'Popish Plot', and was twice imprisoned for it. Upon his second release he retired to Clapham, then considered to be 'in the country'. Samuel Pepys died on 26 May 1703. His diaries, which had been written in code, were bequeathed to Magdalen College, Cambridge, where they can still be viewed.
