Endangered Oceans by Jody S Rake
Oceans are one of Earth's most significant habitats. Filled with millions of species of life, human actions have put this important ecosystem in danger. Why are oceans so important to humans? Why should we change our actions to help protect them? Endangered Oceans answers these questions by engaging readers with lively text, graphic features and stunning photography. Readers will learn about the vast life within the oceans and the part they can play in protecting it.
Are you looking for a book or series that encapsulates the variety of ways our Earth’s resources are being diminished? If so, this may be the book series for you. . .Each 32–page volume presents a broad overview of the many ways humans not only rely on Earth’s resources, but also harm the Earth’s resources. Each volume includes a table of contents, glossary, critical thinking questions using the Common Core, index, internet sites, and additional reading suggestions. The pictures, captions, and FACTS provide the reader with specific examples of environmental issues presented in each chapter. However, because there are a wide variety of competing challenges that affect Earth’s resources (understandably so), when presented all at once, it could make it hard for some readers to gain an understanding of or to think deeply about any one issue. I can imagine this series being used as a jumping off point for your students to begin thinking about the diversity and talking about the interconnectedness of the issues surrounding Earth’s endangered resources. To this end, the best part of the series is the set of critical thinking questions at the end of each volume. These questions provide the opportunity for Grades 3–4 students to look deeper into issues and identify relationships as well as brainstorm ways in which humans can make a difference in protecting our endangered resources. These books could also help ELL students to grasp basic concepts that are enhanced by the engaging photos and concise graphics as part of their visual literacy. * NSTA Recommends *
