Espana Y Los Espanoles de Hoy by Fernando Opere
Espana y los espanoles de hoy: Historia, sociedad y cultura takes a comprehensive approach to the study of Spanish culture by looking at history, society and culture with a primary emphasis on the 20th and 21st centuries. Divided into three parts, the first section looks to the 20th century to see how it shaped Spain today. It also includes an in-depth focus on modern Spanish society: family, birth rate, immigration, youth, customs, and cultural identity. It ends with an examination of culture in Spain, especially the arts. With content focused primarily on the past two centuries, students using Espana y los espanoles de hoy receive a much more focused study of modern-day Spanish civilization and culture than they would with other books that provide basic overviews of the past two thousand years in Spain. Espana y los espanoles de hoy balances history, society and culture, challenging the student at an intellectually advanced level. Appropriate for advanced courses in Spanish civilization and culture, Espana y los espanoles de hoy can also be used in history, and anthropology, and Spanish study abroad programs.
Fernando Opere is a historian and literary critic. He is currently Professor of Spanish at the University of Virginia, and has published four books on Spanish and Latin American culture. Carrie Douglass is Professor of Anthropology at Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, Virginia. Carrie has worked in Spain on two different issues: bullfighting and issues of identity and nationalism (Bulls Bullfighting and Spanish Identities, Arizona University Press, 1997) and the phenomenon of low birthrates in Spain (Barren States: the Population Implosion in Europe, Editor, Berg, 2005).
