Evacuee by Peter Hepplewhite
This book makes for a fascinating read, consisting of the personal accounts of four contributors - men and women who were child evacuees during the Second World War. Together with information on the evacuation programme including why it was needed, the book provides details on the new homes the evacuees went to, their lives there, and the eventual return to their families at the end of the war. It takes an intriguing look at the new way of life experienced by the contributors in wartime Britain. It is complete with colour and black and white photographs, a glossary and an index.
One of a series dealing with different aspects of World War II fitting in well with both KS2 and KS3 history requirements where eye-witness accountsand oral history are emphasised.. The book gives an insight into the schools, leisure and expectations of those times and is very factual, using authentic photographs and documents which bring to life the reality of rationing, air-raid shelters, etc... There is much scope for follow-up and group work here, bringing history alive. -- School Librarian 20031001 This series is a refreshingly different approach among the huge number of texts on the market covering the Second World War. -- TES 20031114
