Faint Songs by Jeanette Uff
This is the moving story of five generations of a Merseyside family during the early twentieth century. Social conventions are challenged to breaking point in this enthralling saga of the passions that split five generations of a Merseyside family during the early twentieth century. At the centre of this story is a beautiful, headstrong woman called Fanny. The daughter of a wealthy businessman, Fanny falls in love with and marries an Irish labourer from her father's brickyards. Loving family ties are swept away by uncontrolled emotions, and social convention is challenged to breaking point, yet forgiveness and true affection persevere. As this tale of love and loss unfolds, Jeanette Uff reveals details of the daily life of the times for both rich and poor, as well as the tragic brutality of war. "Faint Songs" shows that, with the next generation, comes the hope that the cycle of regret and betrayal will be broken, to reflect "the love that is always there".
Jeanette Uff was born in Liverpool in 1933. An Associate of the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, she played in repertory. In a varied and eclectic career, she taught English in independent schools, produced plays while living in Malaysia, was a copywriter for the Evening Telegraph and set up four companies producing and marketing eggs. She is now retired.
