A Flag on the Abbey by Rod Brammer
Tells the tale of Finlay, a boy growing up just after the Second World War. His mother joins his father, stationed with the Navy in the Far East, and Finlay is left with his grandfather, living on a large estate in rural Hampshire. This novel evokes the intense relationship of grandfather and grandson, and family and farmworkers.
"..Kathleen Finlay flew towards him as the old man opened his arms to receive the expected hug of welcome. The slap across the face sounded like a horse's hoof stamping on concrete. The homecoming surprise was complete. 'You disgusting old goat! You loathsome lecher!' she began, then whirled on the girl. 'Get upstairs and make yourself decent, hussy'. She turned back to her father. 'I've found tanks on the lawn, brambles growing into the kitchen, a cook who exudes the smell from hell and a whore in your bed. Are there any more surprises?' Her father smiled. 'Kathy, my darling, darling daughter. Welcome home, you've grown so like your mother.'"
Rod Brammer is essentially a countryman before all else. He grew up in the valley of the River Test, where his passion for fieldsports and natural history was nurtured to expertise. Now a world-famous shooting coach, he is able to take some time for himself and write his first series of novels.
