Gin Blossoms: Suicide, Corporatism, Addiction, Creativity, and the Lessons of Doug Hopkins (Scene History) by Joe Biel
Most of the hits from the Gin Blossoms' 1992 breakout album, New Miserable Experience are credited to D. Hopkins, but the mysterious songwriter isn't mentioned anywhere else in the album notes, or even on the band's website. Joe became fascinated with the forgotten story of Doug Hopkins, the band's co-founder and original songwriter, and delved into the history, scouring decades of old interviews and news articles to piece it together. It's a story of heavy drinking, creative genius, and fraught band relationships, ultimately ending in tragedy.Joe Biel is a self-made publisher and filmmaker who leans on punk rock for his inspiration, methods, and beginnings. He is the co-founder of the Portland Zine Symposium and the founder/manager of Microcosm Publications. He has been featured in Time Magazine, Publisher's Weekly, Utne Reader, Portland Mercury, Oregonian, Broken Pencil, Readymade, Punk Planet, Profane Existence, Spectator (Japan), G33K (Korea), and Maximum Rocknroll with his films on the Dinner and Bikes program. He is the author of several books, including Good Trouble: Creating a Successful Life and Business on the Spectrum, Manspressions: Interpreting Men's Conduct, The CIA Makes Science Fiction Unexciting, Beyond the Music, Bamboozled, Bipedal, By Pedal, and others. He is the filmmaker of the Groundswell film series including the documentaries Aftermass: Biking in a Post-Critical Mass Portland, If It Ain't Cheap, It Ain't Punk, Of Dice & Men, $100 & A T-Shirt.
