Stephen Matterson is a Fellow of Trinity College, University of Dublin, Ireland, and a Professor of English Studies. He has written or edited nine volumes and more than sixty articles, essays, and reviews of American literature. His previous works include the Penguin Classics edition of Herman Melville's The Confidence-Man (edited with an introduction and notes, 1990); American Literature: The Essential Lexicon (2003); the Wordsworth edition of Walt Whitman's Collected Poems (edited with an introduction and notes, 2006); and Learning Poetry (with Darryl Jones; 1st edition, 2000; updated and enlarged second edition, 2007).
