Hotel Brasil by Frei Betto
7io de Janeiro. A family hotel whose clients reflect Brazilian society: multi-racial, with starkly contrasting backgrounds, and destitute. The first victim is found decapitated in bed, the head lying on the floor of his room. An eerie Mona Lisa smile on the victim's face and no evidence of a struggle indicate a murderer received as a friend. Other hotel guests are eventually killed, all decapitated. A classical crime novel in one way but really an opportunity for the author to describe Brazilian society, especially those left behind.Frei Betto is a Brazilian writer, political activist, liberation theologian, and Dominican friar who was born in 1944. In the 1970s, the military dictatorship imprisoned him for four years for smuggling people out of Brazil. Frei Betto is involved in Brazilian politics in addition to his work on eradicating hunger in Brazil. He was an advisor on jail policy and child hunger for President Lula da Silva's government. It's his debut novel, and it's a good one.
Jethro Soutar: Jethro Soutar was born in Sheffield and now lives in London. He has recently authored two volumes of non-fiction, 'Ronaldinho: Football's Flamboyant Master' and 'Gael Garc12a Bernal and the Latin American New Wave,' both of which were released in July 2008.
