In a Sentimental Mood by Ivana Bodrozic

Ivana Bodrozic's In a Sentimental Mood is emotional, but never woeful, deliberate, yet playful poetry capable of reaching both the highest and deepest registers of expression. From abstract jazz-inspired musings to bedroom intimacies, these poems converse with the idea that being alone is not the worst thing that can happen to a person. To lose your dignity and the dignity of your words--that is the worst thing.
"In this brave and fresh poetry with (no) sentimental mood, "the bIeeding/ is what's/ in the middle" -- between the comfort and the disaster, the laugh and the cry, the joy and the sadness, the tenderness and the cruelty, the peace and the war, the summer atmosphere and the grave stones, the Eros and the Thanatos, the ethics and the esthetics, between the life and the death" Lidija Dimkovska, author, A Spare Life and ph Neutral History
"In this vibrant collection Ivana Bodroic, a voice of a generation marked by war, frames poems of loss, love, and trauma in jazz classics, lifting the haunting past into the realm of music giants. Astute, playful, interrogating, and dexterously rendered into English by Ellen Elias-Bursac and Damir odan, these poems move with sustained passion and intimate precision." Andrea Jurjevic, author, Small Crimes
"Just finished In a Sentimental Mood . Which did, indeed, put me in a sentimental mood. Very beautiful collection of poems." Hannah, Porter Square Books
Ivana Bodrozic was born in Vukovar, Croatia, in 1982, where she lived until the Yugoslav Wars started in 1991. That year her father disappeared while fighting for Croatian independence and she and the rest of her family moved to a refugee hotel in Kumrovec. In 2005, she published her first poetry collection, The First Step into Darkness, and in 2010 her acclaimed and bestselling first novel The Hotel Tito, which won three major awards in Croatia and the Prix Ulysse for Best Debut Novel in France. It was published by Seven Stories in 2017. Since then Bodrozic released her second poetry collection, A Crossing for Wild Animals, and a short story collection, 100% Cotton. We Trade Our Night for Someone Else's Day is her second novel and her first political thriller. Ellen Elias-Bursac translates fiction and nonfiction from Bosnian, Croatian, and Serbian. She has taught in the Harvard University Slavic Department and is a contributing editor to Asymptote. Her most recent translation for Seven Stories is Robert Perisic's novel No-Signal Area.
