Originally published in 1972, this was the most thorough discussion of morphological theory to appear in recent years, and one of the few to be based directly on an 'inflecting' or 'fusional' language - in this case Latin. The book is addressed to theoretical and descriptive linguists in general and no knowledge of Latin is assumed.

Peter Matthews is a Fellow of St. John's College, Cambridge, and an Emeritus Professor of Linguistics at Cambridge University. Cambridge's St. John's College. Inflectional Morphology (1972), Morphology (2nd ed.) are among his many writings. A Brief History of Structural Linguistics (2001), Syntactic Relations: A Critical Review (2007), Linguistics: A Very Short Introduction (2003), and The Positions of Adjectives in English (2014).
