Jill Heinerth, a cave diver and prolific author, has dived further into caves than any other woman in history. Jill provides a peek of a breathtaking world few will experience with a series of magnificent photographs that range from inside Antarctic icebergs to the Floridan Aquifer and underground Siberia. Jill is an award-winning filmmaker who wrote, produced, and starred in the PBS documentary series Water's Journey, which takes viewers on a journey around the world's finest water systems. International periodicals while new media firms look to her to capture severe conditions, and Hollywood directors such as Lakeshore Studios (The Cave) and James Cameron have called on her to produce tough underwater scenes. Jill Heinerth has participated in research and exploration missions with The National Geographic Society, NOAA, Texas A&M University, the Bahama Caves Research Foundation, and the United States Geological Survey.
Among them are the Deep Cave Diving Team and a slew of others. Jill led a team of cave divers, geologists, journalists, and Enduro motorcycle riders across the desert to the Egypt-Libya border in January 2012 in quest of the wonders that lay beneath the famed Siwa Oasis. Sport Diver Magazine dubbed her a Living Legend, and she was inducted into the prestigious New York Explorer's Club and the inaugural class of the Women Diver's Hall of Fame, among other honors. She has also won numerous photography and cinematography awards. Jill received the Wyland ICON award recently.
Wyland, an artist, developed the award, which is given out every year to persons who embody the adventurous spirit of the undersea world and inspire others to do the same. Jill joins the ranks of Jacques Cousteau, Lloyd Bridges, Dr. Sylvia Earle, Dr. Eugenie Clark, Rachel Carson, Zale Parry, and Robert Ballard as the 7th woman to earn the icon award. Jill is a cave, rebreather, sidemount, and technical diving teacher as well as a diving industry expert consultant.
