Jackie by Jackie Fullerton
For three decades, Jackie Fullerton has been a prominent feature of television in Northern Ireland. Football fans chant his name on the terraces and players step up to the mike 'just because it's Jackie'. Stars respect his integrity, while Martin O'Neill and Sir Alex Ferguson regard him as a friend. But how did the boy from humble beginnings in Ballymena go on to become a household name? In "Jackie: I Did It My Way", Fullerton revisits his days as a player in the Irish League before a penalty competition kick-started his television career. With the easygoing charm and humour which has become his trademark, he turns the spotlight on Northern Ireland's World Cup campaigns in Spain and Mexico, tells the truth about the barney with big Jack Charlton in '94 and recalls how a Protestant from Ballymena was made welcome in Gaelic Athletic Association clubs across the country. Among the many revelations, Fullerton comes clean about his alleged affair with Gloria Hunniford, reveals why he turned down the chance to move to national television and recalls the heart attack in 2004 that turned his life upside down. He also reflects movingly on his friendships with two Northern Ireland sporting geniuses, George Best and Joey Dunlop. Brimful of great stories, this book will have you laughing one minute and crying the next. Like the man himself, it is part sport, part entertainment - and all heart.
Jackie Fullerton has worked as a BBC sports presenter since 1992 and has also fronted a number of radio programmes involving music. Roger Anderson is a sports producer with BBC Northern Ireland and was previously Irish sport columnist for the Mail on Sunday. He is a former British Weekly Sports Writer of the Year and Northern Ireland Sports Journalist of the Year. He is also co-author with Harry Gregg of Harry's Game and author of The Fighting Irish: Inside the Ring with Boxing's Celtic Warriors.
