Launching Literacy Stations by Debbie Diller

Literacy work stations are being embraced in many elementary schools as a way to ensure students of all ages are completing thoughtful, challenging tasks while their teachers meet with small groups of students. Debbie Diller, author of the book Literacy Work Stations, takes you into two primary classrooms to demonstrate how to create a thriving stations program. Patty Terry's first grade students and Vicky Georgas' second graders work in stations that include a wealth of literacy tasks designed to build academic and collaborative skills across the curriculum. This three-part video series captures the teaching conversations Patty, Vicky, and Debbie have with their students in real-time as new stations are introduced, problems with existing stations are analyzed, and the match between station tasks and student needs are assessed. Program 1: Launching Stations Debbie explains the basic principles, and then launches work stations in two classrooms—the drama station in first grade, and the science station in second grade. Program 2: Managing Stations This program provides examples of the nitty gritty issues that emerge with work stations, and how they are handled by teachers. Program 3: Sustaining Stations Ensuring students have interesting, engaging materials in stations and can work independently in them is an ongoing challenge for teachers. DVD extras include audio tours of the work stations in both classrooms.

Debbie has worked as a national consultant since 2000, but she still fantasizes about going back to school in the fall. She got her bachelor's and master's degrees in teaching from Millersville University and Temple University, respectively, and spent the following four decades as an instructor after playing school in the basement of her childhood home in Lititz, Pennsylvania. She has worked as a classroom teacher, migrant education teacher, Title I reading teacher, and literacy coach in a variety of public school settings from Pre-K to grade 10. Her enthusiasm for teaching originates from her enthusiasm for learning. I've always enjoyed learning new things.

Being a teacher allowed me to share my passion for learning with children and, later, adults. One of the most important aspects of her education is listening to teachers and their professional development requirements. As I work with teachers, I attempt to understand their requirements by learning as much as I can about them and listening to their concerns. Then I start with them where they are and work with them to assist them take the next steps toward where they (and/or their educational systems) want to go. Debbie's book ideas come from her work with teachers. I believe in professional reading and professional learning communities, and I assist teachers in their efforts to better fulfill the needs of all kids in their classrooms.

She keeps a writer's notebook to collect ideas, thoughts, and notes, and she listens for frequently asked questions, patterns, and teachers' requirements. The classic joke about how to devour an elephant comes to mind frequently. That's how I write: in small chunks on aircraft, in hotel rooms, and on rare occasions in my workplace. Teachers' questions and comments motivate me to continue working in classrooms on a daily basis, which keeps my profession alive. Debbie's family has changed and increased in recent years.

Jon, her son, and Jessica, her daughter, are both married, and she has a granddaughter, Chloe, with another on the way. Tom, Debbie's late spouse, died in 2012.
