Sara Benson is a well-known travel journalist who has lived on Maui, the Big Island of Hawaii, and Oahu over her career, which has carried her from California to Japan and back. Her first backpacking trip to Hawaii was to Maui's Haleakala National Park, where she has visited numerous times over the last 15 years. Sara has worked as a national park ranger and hikes frequently everywhere she goes. She trekked every trail mentioned in this book on Maui again for this guide, covering well over 100 miles on a variety of terrain, from jagged lava flows and cinder deserts to misty cloud forests and muddy waterfall pathways. Sara has written dozens of travel and outdoor activity guidebooks for Lonely Planet and Fodor's, among others.

She has visited over 30 countries and has traveled to every continent except Antarctica. Her work has appeared in a variety of publications worldwide, including the Honolulu Star-Advertiser and Backpacker, as well as on renowned travel and news websites.
