The Man Who Came to Dinner by Moss Hart
Sheridan Whiteside - critic, lecturer, wit, radio orator, intimate friend of the great and near-great - dines at the home of the Stanleys, where he slips on their doorstep and breaks his hip. The result is a tumultuous six weeks of confinement.Whiteside turns the Stanley household upside down, forcing everyone in town to cater to his egotistical demands. Meanwhile, his secretary has given her notice after falling in love with a local reporter, and Whiteside must engage every weapon in his considerable arsenal of guile and manipulation to keep her in his employ - including blackmail, deceit and the intervention of the fading actress Lorraine Sheldon combined with the elegant British wit of playwright Beverly Carlton.Born in New York City in 1904, Moss Hart began his career as a playwright in 1925 with The Hold-Up Man, yet archieved his first major success in the 1930 collaboration with George S. Kaufman, Once in a Lifetime. In addition to numerous Broadway productions, such as The Man Who Came to Dinner and You Can't Take it With You, which was awared the Pulitzer Price in 1938, Hart wrote screenplays for Gentleman's Agreement and A Star is Born. Moss Hart also gained universal recognition for his award-winning direction of My Fair Lady in 1956.
