"This book is a great resource for beginning and experienced teachers as they transition to the Common Core State Standards for MathematicsI recommend it for anyone who wants specific strategies for engaging their students in mathematics in a thoughtful and meaningful way." - Mathematics Teaching in Middle School

Christine Moynihan has worked as a classroom teacher in Newton, Massachusetts, as well as a mathematics curriculum specialist and an elementary school principal. Christine is now a consultant who works with schools and districts to help them improve their educational quality. Christine's family moved to Florida from the Boston area when she was in fifth grade. She recalls, We did a lot together, and my family tie grew even deeper. She had always been an excellent student in every subject since she was a natural memorizer. She was picked for a select new math program of studies in seventh grade, where kids learned about set theory; she excelled because she was quick to memorize rules, theorems, and processes.

Yet even back then, I was curious about why things functioned mathematically and how thoughts and concepts were linked to one another and to procedures. My father was an engineer, and he enjoyed answering my why inquiries and guiding me toward a conceptual understanding that has served me well both as a student and as a teacher.Christine credits her mother for instilling in her a voracious hunger for reading. My preferred genre has always been mysteries. Christine, the first of nine siblings, was in a position of responsibility and took it very seriously. I've always enjoyed trying to 'put things together' -- to make connections, to figure out answers to puzzles and challenges.

I used to enjoy playing school with my siblings, and it was assumed that I would become a teacher. As cheesy as it may seem, I wanted to work with children and do something meaningful.... I adore the concept of being able to accompany students on their educational path as a teacher. Assessing where each child is in his learning, determining his strengths, and then helping set the stage for the next steps in his learning has always been a challenge for me.
