Monster in a Box by Spalding Gray

Whether one's garden is a window sill, a condominium patio, a surburban lot, or country acreage, The Piedmont Garden offers simple, sound, easy-to-follow, and often humorous advice on growing beautiful ornamentals and productive herbs and vegetables in the Piedmont region of the southern United States.

The book is different from most others in two ways. First, because each section gives the complete cultural requirements of the plant subject, the reader can skip from section to section, reading about plants that are of particular interest without fear of missing details about their care. Second, the book is organized on a month by month basis so that plants appear in the order they require care. The more experienced gardner will find information about more challenging horticultural efforts. Both common and botanical names are used and a listing of plant societies is included.

Spalding Gray was born and raised in Rhode Island. A cofounder of the acclaimed New York City theater company the Wooster Group, he appeared on Broadway and in numerous films, including Roland Joffe's The Killing Fields, David Byrne's True Stories, Garry Marshall's Beaches, and as the subject of the 2010 Steven Soderbergh documentary, And Everything Is Going Fine. His monologues include Sex and Death to the Age 14, Swimming to Cambodia, Monster in a Box, Gray's Anatomy, and It's a Slippery Slope. He died in 2004.
