Notes on Quantum Mechanics by Enrico Fermi
The lecture notes presented here in facsimile were prepared by Enrico Fermi for students taking his course at the University of Chicago in 1954. They provide examples of his ability to lecture simply and clearly on the most essential aspects of quantum mechanics. At the close of each lecture, Fermi created a single problem for his students. These challenging exercises were not included in Fermi's notes but were preserved in the notes of his students. This second edition includes a set of these assigned problems as compiled by one of his former students, Robert A. Schluter.Enrico Fermi (1901-1954), the Father of the Atomic Age, won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1938 for his demonstrations of new radioactive elements created by neutron irradiation, as well as his associated discovery of nuclear processes caused by slow neutrons. Fermi published Thermodynamics, based on a course of lectures at Columbia University, just a year before winning the Nobel Prize, an enduring classic that Dover originally reprinted in 1956 and has been in print continually since then, one of the foundations of Dover's physics program. Fermi, a theorist as well as an experimentalist, crammed a lot of science into his brief life, which ended prematurely due to the radiation he got while working on the construction of the atomic bomb. Of course, Fermi's contributions were not limited to nuclear physics: the events of December 2, 1942, at the University of Chicago's Stagg Field, when he and other scientists created the world's first self-sustaining chain reaction, will long be remembered.
