He found prominence with the plays Arcadia and The Coast of Utopia: Part 1€Voyage/Part 2€Shipwreck/Part 3€Salvage (Vivian Beaumont Theatre), Rock 'n Roll (Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre), The Invention of Love (Lyceum Theatre), Dirty Linen & New-Found-Land (John Golden Theatre), The Real Thing (Plymouth Theatre), Travesties (Ethel Barrymore Theatre), Jumpers (Billy Rose Theatre), and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead (Eugene O'Neill Theatre).

Film screenplays include Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Brazil, The Russia House, and Shakespeare in Love.
