Our Empire Story by H E Marshall
Our Empire Story: Stories of India and the Greater Colonies Told to Boys and Girls by H. E. Marshall. Illustrated by J. R. Skelton. H. E. Marshall's 1908 book Our Empire Story is one of the great classics which emanated from the time when the British Empire was at its height. Spanning four continents, the Empire included Canada, Southern Africa, India, Australia and New Zealand-and this hugely entertaining book covers them all. This epic deals with each individual nation from the time of the first European settlement to the beginning of the twentieth century. Originally designed for children aged 9 to 12 years, the immense readability of Our Empire Story quickly gained it a far wider audience. It became a bestseller of its day. Written in the colourful style of its time, Our Empire Story is an unashamedly pro-British book and is filled with stories of high drama, humour and tragedy. Above all, it serves as a lasting testament to one of the most powerful empires in history. This version is an accurate reproduction of the original with all errors which mar other editions removed.
Henrietta Elizabeth Marshall, a prominent author of children's history books a century ago, is suddenly regaining prominence. Our Island Tale, A History of England for Boys and Girls was originally published in 1905, and was immediately followed by Scotland's Story in 1906 and Our Imperial Story in 1908. A History of France, A History of Germany, This Land of Ours, and English Literature for Boys and Girls are among her other works. She also contributed to the critically acclaimed Told to the Children series, writing The Tale of Napoleon and The Story of Cromwell for the Children's Heroes series.
