The Personalized High School by Joseph Dimartino

How can we personalize the high school experience in order to improve the learning of all students? Grounded in the six Call to Action principles for guiding high school reform (developed with the National Association for Secondary School Principals), this book takes an in-depth look at how diverse schools have redesigned programs to create more effective learning experiences for students, the challenges faced, and lessons learned. Featuring examples from nine different models, it offers recommendations for educators and parents on how to make these ideas work in any high school.
Joseph A. DiMartino is founder and president of the Center for Secondary School Redesign, Inc. (CSSR). Under his leadership CSSR has become a leading provider of groundbreaking technical assistance to support both policy change and change leadership at the district and school level, thus leading to a richer secondary school experience for all youth. He coauthored, with John Clarke, the highly acclaimed book, Personalizing the High School Experience for Each Student, published by the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) in 2008. He also consulted with ASCD in the creation of the video series High Schools at Work: Creating Student - Centered Learning and also cowrote an accompanying facilitators guide. Primarily because of his leadership in the development of Breaking Ranks II and his contributions to Breaking Ranks in the Middle, Joe was given the distinguished Service to Education Award by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) in 2006. He was named a DiFelice Scholar by Salem State College in Salem, Massachusetts, in 2007. Denise L. Wolk is a senior program associate and director of publications and communications at Educators for Social Responsibility, an organization dedicated to helping educators create safe, caring, respectful, and productive learning environments. Her duties include providing coaching and training on high school redesign elements, including advisory design and implementation, as well as production for various ESR publications. Prior to joining ESR, Denise served as a program associate in the Secondary School Redesign program at The Education Alliance at Brown University. Her work included researching and developing workshops directly tied to personalizing the experience for students in high schools. As a member of the SSR team at Brown, she served on the core work group with NASSP to write Breaking Ranks II: Strategies for Leading High School Reform , published in 2004, and also served as a member of the core group to write Breaking Ranks in the Middle , another NASSP project. Denise was also a contributor to the development of the workshop and publication Changing Systems to Personalize Learning: Discover the Power of Advisories (LAB, 2003), and has facilitated workshops and institutes with schools around the country.
