Rex Beach was a novelist, playwright, and Olympic water polo player from the United States. Rex Beach was born in Atwood, Michigan, but relocated with his family to Tampa, Florida, where his father was a fruit grower. He was initially drawn to Alaska during the Klondike Gold Rush. The Spoilers, Rex Beach's debut book, was inspired by a true story of corrupt government officials stealing gold mines from prospectors. The Spoilers was a best-selling novel that was followed by a slew of additional Westerns. Many regard Rex Beach to be the North's Victor Hugo, and his Westerns have been made into popular films.
