Staging America by Sonja Kuftinec
Examines Cornerstone and community-based theater in the United States. Now in paperback, ""Staging America: Cornerstone and Community-Based Theater"" details how one theater company's performance-making process has contributed to an ongoing negotiation of American identity. Sonja Kuftinec investigates community-based theater to trace the historical affiliations of the form and critically examines how community-based theater both enables and challenges the very notion of ""community"" as a fixed entity. ""Staging America"" received an honorable mention for the 2003 Barnard Hewitt Award for the best book in theater history.
This book will challenge any reader who questions what it means to create American theater... [T]he author is bold and passionate about asking provocative questions throughout her text. - Theatre History Studies ""Kuftinec is so skilled at capturing the diversity in these performances that one wishes she would undertake the daunting task of a history of community theatre around the globe."" - Theatre Research International ""Kuftinec provides a highly readable and responsible overview of the academic and practical concerns informing community theatre practice today.... It stands as a good example of self-reflexive scholarship and a stimulating record of previously under-represented practice."" - Modern Drama ""[E]ssential reading for scholars interested in community-based theatre and American theatre history."" - Theatre Survey
Sonja Kuftinec is an associate professor at the University of Minnesota where she teaches courses in theater historiography and performance and social change. She has published several articles on the Cornerstone Theater Company and on her own community-based work in the Balkans.
