The Story of Graphic Design by Patrick Cramsie
"The Story of Graphic Design" is a comprehensive illustrated history of the development of graphic styles in the West, from the origins of the alphabet itself, through the invention of printing in the Renaissance, and the subsequent major styles (with emphasis on the nineteenth and twentieth centuries), to the recent impact of digital technology on design. This authoritative history places major developments in the context of social, cultural and technological change and, at the same time, exposes the reader to a comprehensive selection of the greatest work by book makers and graphic designers since the invention of writing.
"Dilligently referenced and sensitively insightful, an updated thorough appraisal such as this is not before time" Peter Saville "Mr. Cramsie's insightful focus on the frequently overlooked analysis of specific formal properties...sets this book apart from other design histories and makes it a valuable resource for students and professionals" William Longhauser, Graphic Designer, Professor, and Director of the Outside Institute
Patrick Cramsie studied graphic design at London's Middlesex University before going on to work in an Anglo-Japanese design company and then later as a freelance designer. His design work has centred on corporate identity and book design, but alongside this he has written book reviews for The Times Literary Supplement and The Tate Gallery Magazine.
