This Is How He Learned To Love by Randall Brown
First runner-up in the Sonder Press 2018 Chapbook Competition, Randall Brown's This Is How He Learned To Love, is a masterfully crafted collection of 37 brief, yet luminous fictions. Brown's prose is spare, and as delicately rendered as the windows he grants into the worlds of his characters, yet the stories gathered here are deeply, utterly resonant. This Is How He Learned To Love captures the true vastness of the human heart--its susceptibility and perseverance; its resilience; and, above all, its indelible, persistent yearning for connection.
Dr. Brown grew up in an upper middle class home but became a Christian in an inner city house church. God called him to be a minister of the Word among the poorest people in our nation. Dr. Brown attended several institutions of higher learning including, Fort Wayne Bible college, Southeastern college, Westminister seminary, and Gordon-Conwell. While at Gordon he married his wife Barb, and they have three children; Stephanie, Emily, and Christopher. In 1989 he recieved a call to Military Ave. Evangelical Presbyterain Church located in southwest Detroit, which at the time was one of the poorest communities in our nation. Dr. Brown lives in southwest Detroit where he and Barb raised their children. His placement at Military Ave. combined with a discipline of biblical thought expanded his call to teach the larger Christian community about matters of hermeneutics, biblical studies, and justice. Dr. Brown taught at Tyndale Bible college (until it closed), and currently teaches annual courses at Tyumen Bible Seminary in Russia, and The Middle East Bible Institute in Egypt.
