Tilly Trotter Widowed by Catherine Cookson

Tilly Trotter's life has been far from easy, and returning from America to the County Durham village she grew up in only makes it harder. Despite her new status as Lady of Highfield Manor the old prejudices still exist. Branded a witch by the locals, hostility towards Tilly, and her children -- Willy and adopted Mexican daughter Josefina -- is rife. Thankfully, there are those willing to defend her. In fact there are those who long to offer her the security of marriage. But Tilly, bound by a promise to her late husband, is unsure that she can re-marry. And she's not the only one struggling with matters of the heart; both Willy and Josefina are facing love dilemmas of their own. But Tilly, courageous as ever, is determined, no matter what, that, she and her children will find happiness!
Dame Catherine Cookson began writing novels when she was forty and has had nearly one hundred books published. In her twenties she moved to Hastings where, after the tragic loss of four babies and a mental breakdown, she began to use her experiences in the North East as the inspiration for novels which have sold over one hundred million copies around the world. In 1976 she returned to Northumberland with her husband Tom and continued to write almost up to her death in 1998.
