Turnstones by Brian Fitzpatrick
This is the second book in a new series which will be written to closely match and follow the "English 5-14 Guidelines in Scotland", the first text to do so. "Turnstones 2" is written for S2 students, and is intended to offer as flexible a course as possible, with teachers able to navigate their own route throughout. This means that the chapters aren't necessarily in the order that they will be taught. The skills that are to be taught are reading, writing, talking, listening and watching. Most tasks have been designed to include more than one of these skills. "Turnstones 2" is an ideal companion for students following this course in Scotland. There will be teachers' materials on the accompanying website.

A particularly strong section is 'Unlocking your imagination', which looks at storylines, characterisation and other features of a good story. It finishes with students being asked to write their own story, it looks like and excellent compact and focused unit. There is also a good section which examines mass media, which has a contemporary feel to it. !
