Soetsu Yanagi was a philosopher, art historian, aesthete, and poet who lived from 1889 to 1961. He developed a theory for why certain unknown craftsmen's goods were so beautiful, and he became the founder of the Japanese folk crafts (mingei) movement. He was the first director of the Japanese Folk Crafts Museum, which he helped build.
