A Wild Elephant at Camp by Anupama Moharker
Kutti, a young tribal boy, lives in a wildlife sanctuary that is home to herds of elephants. When an abandoned baby elephant is found in the sanctuary, Kutti becomes her caretaker and friend. Based on a real life incident, this moving tale is also a story of a child's growth as he learns to care for another being. Warm watercolour illustrations bring the story alive, while a section on wildlife sanctuaries and elephant reserves in India, with photographs of the elephant and the young boy on whom the story is based, make this an informative and educational read.
Anupama Moharkar teaches in Bangalore, India. She wrote this book while at the elephant sanctuary in Mudumalai, South India, where Kutti and his friends come from. Emanuele Scanziani, originally from Italy, is an artist and freelance illustrator who has illustrated the well-known Shikra series of books on environmental awareness, and The Gita of Waste, a handbook on recycling. He is known for his stunning line drawings for the collectors' edition The Legend of the Fish (also available from Turnaround).
