To top it off, the pleasant Norfolk coastline was seen as a likely landing place for any German invasion.In this book, archivist and historian Frank Meeres has gathered an astonishing range of true stories and poignant images relating to the people of the county during that dramatic period. While there had been petitions and discussions of the subject throughout the Victorian era, by the beginning of the twentieth century it was time for stronger action. Centralised organisations formed behind Millicent Fawcett and Emmeline Pankhurst. Protests, marches, civil disobedience and arrests followed as the campaign gained momentum. Women chained themselves to railings, smashed windows, committed arson, and Emily Davison died under the hooves of the king's horse on Derby Day 1913. The turning point was the First World War: after it women over the age of thirty obtained the vote at last, and full suffrage came ten years later. The suffragette movement forced every woman in early twentieth-century Britain to think about her place in society: this book looks at issues of vital importance to your ancestors of a century ago.  Frank Meeres presents all the important developments in the suffrage movement in a succinct chronological way, bringing the history of the time vividly to life.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49510278398225,"sku":"GOR006633963","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49626069926161,"sku":"GOR011360992","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51799559536913,"sku":"GOR006956801","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1445600072.jpg?v=1761646512"},{"product_id":"paranormal-norfolk-book-frank-meeres-9781848684713","title":"Paranormal Norfolk","description":"Norfolk has many associations with the paranormal, from ancient tales of Shuck the hound that has haunted the county's lanes for a thousand years to tales of ghosts from the Second World War and of unidentified f lying objects. Many tales are published for the very first time, such as Mottie Green, the Wells 'witch', and a new light is thrown on more familiar stories such as the haunting of Syderstone Parsonage and the Snettisham ghost. This book sets out to answer that question, largely through contemporary sources: letters, diaries and journals, together with a wide range of visual material. It looks at life on the battlefronts throughout the world, as well as men serving at sea and in the air. It focuses on the home front, too, and the widening contribution of women, both in such traditional roles as nursing and in a vast range of other occupations.  The book considers many other issues, such as conscription, conscientious objection, air raids, fear of invasion and the dangers of war to local fishermen. It describes how these dramatic events affected the lives of ordinary people; their patterns of work, diet and social behaviour.  The author also discusses the careers of world-famous Norfolk figures, such as Edith Cavell, the nurse who was shot by the Germans, and others who deserve to be better known like George Roberts, the Labour MP for Norwich whose strong support for the war gained him a seat in the Cabinet but drove him away from his former friends in the Labour Party. However, the book's main emphasis is on how men, women and children in the county lived, and sometimes died, during the four years of the Great War. After a chapter on 'strangers' within the county - refugees, prisoners of war and enemy aliens - the book ends by looking at how individual communities chose to remember their dead.  The author is a well-known local historian who has long had a particular interest in the First World War. In a gripping narrative he has skilfully combined these two areas of expertise to produce a very readable contribution to the history of Norfolk. It will appeal as much to the younger reader interested in the past as to those senior citizens for whom that great conflict and its aftermath is still a living memory.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49539655401745,"sku":"GOR005449211","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1860772900.jpg?v=1751155300"},{"product_id":"norfolk-book-frank-meeres-9781859374023","title":"Norfolk","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49544594489617,"sku":"GOR002076623","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49613467910417,"sku":"GOR006377120","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1859374026.jpg?v=1751027375"},{"product_id":"norfolk-at-war-book-frank-meeres-9781445604664","title":"Norfolk at War","description":"During the Second World War, Norfolk was truly on the 'front line'. The men and women of Norfolk took up positions in all branches of the forces to fight for their country. The civilians also did their bit  -  Norfolk's agricultural output increased dramatically during the war, in response to the urgent need for home-grown provisions. The American presence in the county was strong, and has left a rich archive of personal papers and photographs, which are now held at the Norfolk Record Office, along with many diaries and letters of Norfolk people. This new book combines archaeological evidence with documentary research to create a vivid picture of the town at every stage in its development and of the lives of its people; how they made their livings, their health, housing, religion, culture and entertainments. Famous townspeople are discussed, but the emphasis is on the ordinary inhabitant.  The story is brought right up to the present day, including the effects on Bury of the great conflicts of the 20th century, in the second half of which it enjoyed rapid growth, with new light industry and tourism supplementing the traditional agriculture-based trades. In this, his seventh book on the history of East Anglia, the author, a professional historian and teacher of local history, has provided a much-needed account of Bury’s entire past, richly illustrated and very readable, which will appeal to everyone who knows the place... one of the most beautiful towns in England.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49554642469137,"sku":"GOR012369519","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50050754412817,"sku":"GOR006167629","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1860776574.jpg?v=1750768687"},{"product_id":"history-of-great-yarmouth-book-frank-meeres-9781860774577","title":"A History of Great Yarmouth","description":"Great Yarmouth dates its official ‘birthday’ from 1208, when it received its first royal charter, but people have lived in the area for many thousands of years. Its prosperity has rested for centuries upon the ‘silver darlings’ - the herring, upon trade, especially across the North Sea, and in more recent times on tourism and the leisure industry. This book sets Yarmouth in its environmental context, discussing the dramatic effect of rises and falls in sea levels and changes in climate upon the town and its surroundings.  It looks at the proud contribution of Yarmouth and its inhabitants to national and international events, and includes details of the men and women of the area who have made a difference to their country in a variety of ways, with brief biographies of 30 people with close ties to Greater Yarmouth, from Saint Fursey to Myleene Klass, a remarkable set of role models for the inhabitants of the town of today and tomorrow. Above all, however, the book considers the lives of ordinary people, at work and at play. Profusely illustrated, it includes many fascinating photographs from the 1860s to the late 20th century, almost all of which have never before been published.  Unlike most works on Yarmouth, this book looks at the entire area that has always been closely connected to the borough and that now makes up Greater Yarmouth, with a chapter on the history of Gorleston, and chapters on the villages and former villages to the north and south of the central area – and where the majority of the inhabitants of Greater Yarmouth now live. This book brings alive the history of Greater Yarmouth. It will be invaluable to the many people, whether residents or holiday visitors, who have ever wondered what it was like to live here in the past.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49557030535441,"sku":"GOR008303127","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1860774571.jpg?v=1751027707"},{"product_id":"strangers-a-history-of-norwich-s-incomers-book-frank-meeres-9780956038548","title":"Strangers - a History of Norwich's Incomers","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49557238546705,"sku":"GOR013228965","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49605520982289,"sku":"GOR005568844","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0956038549.jpg?v=1750788223"},{"product_id":"north-norfolk-coast-book-frank-meeres-9781860776267","title":"The North Norfolk Coast","description":"The coast of North Norfolk and the towns and villages that stand along and behind it make up one of the most delightful parts of the British Isles. Areas of outstanding beauty include paradises for bird and animal lovers, such as Scolt Head Island, Blakeney Point and Cley and Salthouse marshes. Today’s celebrated landscape is the product of a fascinating history. That this was a rich part of the country in the Middle Ages is shown by the many glorious churches, some with tall towers acting as waymarks. There were monastic houses, too, the most important being Walsingham, which was a place of pilgrimage for thousands including every medieval king of England. Landowning families that built great houses along the coast or just inland included the Rolfes of Heacham, forever associated with Princess Pocahontas, the Bacons at Stiffkey, and the Lestranges of Hunstanton Hall, immortalised in fiction by P.G. Wodehouse. Away from the coast settlements such as the Burnhams and Holt developed as market towns. The latter was devastated by fire in 1708 and newly discovered documents help bring this dramatic event to life. The area has produced its fair share of great seafarers, from admirals such as Christopher Myngs and Cloudesley Shovel to lifeboatman hero Henry Blogg. Horatio Nelson, one of England’s most famous sons, was born in Burnham Thorpe.  The brave men of the coast fished the hostile North Sea and beyond, traded with Iceland and Scandinavia, and served on the frontline in wars with the Spanish, French and, most recently, Germans. Since the early 19th century the area has also seen the rise of tourism. Cromer grew following the arrival of the railway and the promotion of ‘Poppyland’ by Clement Scott and is mentioned as a watering town by Jane Austen. Hunstanton was developed as a seaside resort by the l’Estranges. Frank Meeres has put this beautiful corner of the county into historical context so that residents and visitors will enjoy discovering its special heritage.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49568654688529,"sku":"GOR007872043","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50784741523729,"sku":"GOR011282386","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53083175158033,"sku":"GOR010842924","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1860776264.jpg?v=1751061069"},{"product_id":"norwich-through-time-book-frank-meeres-9781848684584","title":"Norwich Through Time","description":"Norwich Through Time contains 180 photographs of Norwich, of which 90 are old photographs. Dorothy, a member of the well-known Jewson family of Norwich, studied at the Norwich High School for Girls and then Girton College, Cambridge: it was at Girton that she came under the thrall of the two ideas that were to give purpose to her life: Socialism and Feminism. She played an important role in the battle to obtain the vote for women and was one of the first members of the Norwich branch of Emmeline Pankhurst's Women's Social and Political Union: Frank Meeres describes the debacle of Emmeline's visit to Norwich in 1912 and many other aspects of the local suffragette movement; he also looks at Dorothy's campaign to improve the conditions of the poor in her home city. Dorothy's pacifism led her to oppose the First World War, and she went on to become a full-time worker in the women's trade union movement. She became an MP in 1923, the first female MP in East Anglia. Although her time in Parliament lasted only ten months, she continued to be very active in politics, campaigning for women's issues and for peace. Its famous products have ranged from traction engines to moulded paper furniture. Thetford's many fascinating residents have included Thomas Paine, writer and revolutionary, the Maharajah Duleep Singh, and Allan Minns, the first black mayor in Britain.    Breckland is a unique landscape with its sandy soils and its meres. It includes the country's earliest industrial landscape in the flint mines of Grimes' Graves. Murderers, poachers, thieves, pickpockets and vagabonds all went about their business with impunity.  Crime took place on the streets, on public transport, in homes, pubs, prisons, asylums, workhouses and brothels  - it was all part of everyday life in Yarmouth in the late 1800s. Naturally the punishments awarded varied considerably, depending upon the crimes committed. Murderers and thieves - particularly horse thieves - could expect the rope, though others could hope for a reprieve. Such a remission would automatically add them to list of convicts to be deported to the penal colonies in Australia. Alternatively, convicts might expect to spend time in gaol or a House of Correction, with hard labour and floggings often thrown in for good measure.  This collection of real life crimes vividly recreates the events surrounding them, offering an insight not only into criminal law but also into the social history attached to crime as society evolved and adapted to meet changing industries and class structures.  A must have book for any arm chair detective and anyone interested in the social mores of the day.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49614198669585,"sku":"GOR005006151","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1848684592.jpg?v=1760521834"},{"product_id":"suffragettes-book-frank-meeres-9781445633909","title":"Suffragettes","description":"A century ago, Britain was caught up in one of the most extraordinary events in the country's history - the struggle of its women to obtain the right to vote. While there had been petitions and discussions of the subject throughout the Victorian era, by the beginning of the twentieth century it was time for stronger action.Centralised organisations formed behind Millicent Fawcett and Emmeline Pankhurst. Protest, marches, civil disobedience and arrests followed as the campaign gained momentum. Women chained themselves to railings, smashed windows, committed arson, and Emily Davison died under the hooves of the king's horse on Derby Day 1913. The turning point was the First World War. The suffragettes declared an immediate truce when war was announced and their efforts went into this new cause. At the end of the war, women over the age of thirty were granted the vote, and ten years later women were given the right to vote on the same terms as men.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49618698862865,"sku":"GOR006756473","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50889532965137,"sku":"GOR006505667","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51612152004881,"sku":"GOR011024139","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1445633906.jpg?v=1777714375"},{"product_id":"not-of-this-world-book-frank-meeres-9780954115302","title":"Not of This World","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49638752289041,"sku":"GOR013095965","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51681581302033,"sku":"GOR004434578","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51878645694737,"sku":"GOR011894325","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0954115309.jpg?v=1751013572"},{"product_id":"story-of-the-fens-book-frank-meeres-9781860776977","title":"The Story of the Fens","description":"Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk, as well as Peterborough City Council, all lay claim to a part of the Fens. The fen people know the area as marsh (land reclaimed from the sea) and fen (land drained from flooding rivers running from the uplands). The Fens are unique in having more miles of navigable waterways than anywhere else in the UK. Born in Chedgrave in 1868, the son of a shoemaker, he became the first Labour party Member of Parliament in East Anglia. He rose to become the party's Chief Whip and was one of the very small number of Labour MPs to serve in wartime Governments under David Lloyd George. He rose to become a cabinet minister and a privy councillor, serving in vital roles as Minister of Labour and then as Minister of Food. After the war, disillusioned with the Labour Party, he stood for Norwich as an Independent candidate - and won. He then finished his journey to the right, becoming a Conservative MP.George Roberts was always fiercely independent, making his own mind up on the great issues of the day and speaking out: he was never afraid of offending anyone. A little man, he was a big figure in local and national life in the first quarter of the twentieth century. He deserves to be far better known. This book brings to life the dramatic story of 'Georgie' Roberts.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50678744088849,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50678744744209,"sku":"GOR014031462","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53478679150865,"sku":"GOR014940451","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1909796433.jpg?v=1751315044"},{"product_id":"how-norwich-fought-against-the-plague-book-frank-meeres-9781909796829","title":"How Norwich Fought Against the Plague","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50955920965905,"sku":"GOR012679887","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51397784666385,"sku":"GOR014257469","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53251151528209,"sku":"GOR014830859","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53254909657361,"sku":"GOR014836647","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53522505171217,"sku":"NLS9781909796829","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1909796824.jpg?v=1780739171"},{"product_id":"socialism-in-king-s-lynn-and-suffragism-in-great-yarmouth-book-frank-meeres-9780995773677","title":"Socialism in King's Lynn and Suffragism in Great Yarmouth","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51215784050961,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51215786213649,"sku":"GOR014026093","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52381087793425,"sku":"GOR014509499","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/099577367X.jpg?v=1750982366"},{"product_id":"norwich-so-you-think-you-know-book-frank-meeres-9781845670511","title":"Norwich (So you think you know?)","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51437005898001,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51437005930769,"sku":"GOR003388516","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1845670515.jpg?v=1751411654"},{"product_id":"story-of-norwich-book-frank-meeres-9781860777134","title":"The Story of Norwich","description":"Norwich has a rich and fascinating history. An important Anglo-Saxon market town at the time of the Norman invasion, it grew to become one of the leading cities of England by the early Middle Ages and second only to London in the 16th and 17th centuries. It retained its importance until the Industrial Revolution when, although it was overtaken in size by the new manufacturing towns, it maintained its reputation as one of the most radical and progressive of cities. In this new expanded edition of Meeres’ classic A History of Norwich, the author skilfully combines the latest historical and archaeological findings with more than a quarter-century of original research into the city archives to provide a lively narrative together with a superb selection of illustrations. From its beginnings he describes the city’s growth and government and the many dramatic episodes in its life. He looks at the lives of many of its famous residents but, above all, describes the life of the ordinary people through the centuries—how they earned their livings, their living conditions, with problems of poverty and health, their schooling and how they enjoyed their leisure time. A recurrent theme in the book is the constant flow of people and ideas between Norwich and its neighbours on the continent of Europe. This colourful, fully updated edition will be warmly welcomed by local historians, while its attractive style and presentation will ensure its popularity with the general reader, whether resident or visitor.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51521269137681,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51521269170449,"sku":"GOR005740267","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1860777139.jpg?v=1751412856"},{"product_id":"first-world-war-letters-of-philip-and-ruth-hewetson-book-frank-meeres-9780955635779","title":"The First World War Letters of Philip and Ruth Hewetson","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53114214383889,"sku":"GOR014748949","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53122659647761,"sku":"GOR014755507","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780955635779.jpg?v=1770700499"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/de-de\/collections\/autor-buecher-von-frank-meeres.oembed?page=3","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
