They would gather in a tavern to debate questions of morals, politics, current events, philosophy, and local businesses. Baumgarten’s group was much less formal but the discussions no less vital.  ‘When we gathered, we would talk for hours—often arguing the absurdity of human existence while our phone notifications alerted us to crimes in the area as they happened in real time. The harshness of the world was cushioned by the support of community. And, because of that, we improved the quality of each other’s lives tenfold.’  At the end of the book is a list of incidents and crimes which occured in the city whilst the group gathered. The reminder of the harshness of the urban experience contrasts with the sense of community prevalent in the photographs. The images show both individuals and the details of the lot itself as nature slowly encroaches on the built environment—bats, moths and possums happily co-exist with the human visitors.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49754056327441,"sku":"NGR9781915423320","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51060552007953,"sku":"NIN9781915423320","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1915423325.jpg?v=1751062441"},{"product_id":"good-sick-book-jordan-baumgarten-9781910401194","title":"Good Sick","description":"Good Sick by Jordan Baumgarten is a photographic portrait of the US opioid crisis, shown through its effects on one neighbourhood in Philadelphia. The neighbourhood of Kensington is a nexus for those in and around the city seeking heroin and all that it entails. The supporting addiction based economy co-exists alongside everyday life in the neighbourhood and in its surrounding landscape there are signs and premonitions of disorder and confusion. The photographs in this book depict chaos; nature encroaching on urban decay; an ambiguity between magic and darkness; private moments which are public; animals and humans roam free--fuelled by id, and always, somewhere, there is a fire burning. The images in Good Sick are a small proportion of those taken by Baumgarten, a native of the city, between the winter of 2012 and the spring of 2017.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52849827447057,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52849827512593,"sku":"NIN9781910401194","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781910401194.jpg?v=1764879760"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/de-de\/collections\/autor-buecher-von-jordan-baumgarten.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
