The narrative traces one man's journey and that of the analyst who accompanies him. Following on from Joy Schaverien's highly- acclaimed previous books, this full length description of an analysis demonstrates the developmental path of an erotic transference from its origins in infancy, through fantasies of sex and violence, to mature erotic intimacy. The countertransference is considered with exceptional honesty as the analysis intensifies following the diagnosis of a life-threatening illness. A series of dreams, rich in symbolic imagery, traces the psychological situation as death approaches. This book is essential reading for analysts, psychotherapists, counsellors, arts therapists, and all professionals working with the dying. The compelling narrative will also fascinate the general reader. It is practical, theoretical, and imaginative and all, whether expert or new to the subject, will be inspired as the process of individuation is revealed.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49515186487569,"sku":"GOR003490892","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50924720161041,"sku":"GOR006675201","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53128376451345,"sku":"GOR012131103","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0333763424.jpg?v=1750844331"},{"product_id":"supervision-of-art-psychotherapy-book-joy-schaverien-9780415409612","title":"Supervision of Art Psychotherapy","description":"Supervision of Art Psychotherapy will be an inspiration for advanced practitioners and students in training. A central theme is the nature of the image in supervision, defining its difference from other forms of supervision in the mental health professions. Clinical practice is brought to life through vivid vignettes from diverse settings with a variety of client groups. part I establishes a theoretical base, introducing innovations in practice and addressing complex clinical issues in child and adult work. Topics include the narrative of imagery in supervision, enchantment, ambivalence, a topographical approach, engagement in supervision, and working with the network in art psychotherapy with children part II focuses on supervision in groups addressing training, difference and peer group image consultation, as well as supervision of experienced practitioners part III explores theory related to purposes and challenges in supervision and research. A vital contribution to the literature in the context of Continuing Professional Development, this volume establishes the image as central in the supervision of art psychotherapists. Gender, Countertransference and the Erotic Transference offers new insights into working with complex transference and countertransference phenomena. Including views from a wide spectrum of theoretical backgrounds, it makes a unique contribution to discourse on the themes of gender, sexuality and the erotic transference. The contributors are highly experienced clinicians with international reputations as theorists in the fields of analytical psychology, psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy. Illustrated with closely observed clinical examples and detailed theoretical discussion, innovations in technique are introduced on themes including developmental mourning, female perversion, the meaning and purpose of the erotic transference, the dying patient, lesbian homoerotic transference and supervision of the erotic transference. Countertransference is vividly explored in chapters on sexual difference, the therapist’s body and the challenging topic of perversion in the analyst. The book is divided into four sections: gender and the erotic transference the erotic transference and the symbolic function women working with women historical perspectives on women working with men. Gender, Countertransference and the Erotic Transference extends existing theory, highlighting the symbolic nature of the transference\/countertransference dynamic. Innovative and challenging, Joy Schaverien offers a psychological analysis of the long-established British and colonial preparatory and public boarding school tradition. Richly illustrated with pictures and the narratives of adult ex-boarders in psychotherapy, the book demonstrates how some forms of enduring distress in adult life may be traced back to the early losses of home and family. Developed from clinical research and informed by attachment and child development theories ‘Boarding School Syndrome’ is a new term that offers a theoretical framework on which the psychotherapeutic treatment of ex-boarders may build. Divided into four parts, History: In the Name of Privilege; Exile and Healing; Broken Attachments: A Hidden Trauma, and The Boarding School Body, the book includes vivid case studies of ex-boarders in psychotherapy. Their accounts reveal details of the suffering endured: loss, bereavement and captivity are sometimes compounded by physical, sexual and psychological abuse. Here, Joy Schaverien shows how many boarders adopt unconscious coping strategies including dissociative amnesia resulting in a psychological split between the 'home self' and the 'boarding school self'. This pattern may continue into adult life, causing difficulties in intimate relationships, generalized depression and separation anxiety amongst other forms of psychological distress. Boarding School Syndrome demonstrates how boarding school may damage those it is meant to be a reward and discusses the wider implications of this tradition. It will be essential reading for psychoanalysts, Jungian analysts, psychotherapists, art psychotherapists, counsellors and others interested in the psychological, cultural and international legacy of this tradition including ex-boarders and their partners.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49675354177809,"sku":"GOR006973806","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49786979385617,"sku":"NGR9780415690034","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50132052574481,"sku":"GOR007762599","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50336551043345,"sku":"CIN041569003XG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51207862354193,"sku":"GOR009236245","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52538182828305,"sku":"NLS9780415690034","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52735323537681,"sku":"NIN9780415690034","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/041569003X.jpg?v=1750910430"},{"product_id":"revealing-image-book-joy-schaverien-9781853028212","title":"The Revealing Image","description":"Schaverien painstakingly describes and defines \"processes which have so far only been intuitively known to art therapists\" (p6) by introducing and elaborating the psychoanalytical concepts of transference and countertransference in relation to the use of visual art objects. The authors stated intention in this book is \"to attempt to bridge the perceived gap between the practice of art therapy and analytical forms of psychotherapy...\"(p 229) The epistemological base of this venture includes the fields of philosophy, anthropology, and aesthetics, as well as psychoanalysis. Schaverien suggests that analytical art psychotherapy is a way of working analytically with patients who are unsuitable, or unready, for psychotherapy, giving examples of psychotic and borderline patients, children, and patients in psychiatric settings. This is primarily a book about an analytical approach within art therapy, which may be of interest in itself. The material also raises issues of interest to analysts and psychotherapists, whether or not they work with art in the clinical setting. The book clarifies areas of similarity between the disciplines, and also makes areas of difference apparent. For example, most analysts would agree that visual art, like dream material, and other non-verbal representations of the inner world, can at times articulate and communicate meanings which for one reason or another cannot be verbally articulated at the time, and that this can be pertinent to the aim of analysis. However, I think few analysts would include facilities in their consulting rooms for the kind of art processes described in the book. When the analyst is working with materials in this form, the book will be extremely helpful in sorting out the complexity of the transference situation and the role of interpretation. The book is so strongly grounded in experiences emerging in the presence of actual art processes and objects that I think it will be of most interest to those who are interested in the specific clinical issues involved in relating to the making and use of actual art objects within the setting. Schaverien not only describes the processes involved in detail, but also presents technical approaches to the making and handling of art objects within the setting which will inform the capacity of those who are not trained as art therapists to relate to this kind of material in the consulting room.'","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49733276958993,"sku":"NGR9781853028212","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49759674728721,"sku":"GOR004450073","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51053444366609,"sku":"NIN9781853028212","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51339821089041,"sku":"GOR006224746","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51424429539601,"sku":"CIN1853028215G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53517711704337,"sku":"GOR010821652","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1853028215.jpg?v=1750899986"},{"product_id":"dying-patient-in-psychotherapy-book-joy-schaverien-9780367338695","title":"The Dying Patient in Psychotherapy","description":"The Dying Patient in Psychotherapy is a powerful account of love and death within a psychotherapeutic relationship.
