This text uses country-based studies to analyze the consequences of economic crisis in terms of changing state practices, household and family organization, patterns of resource allocation, and womens work. Contributors examine not only patterns of response to changing economic circumstances but also strategies of choice. The debt crisis and global economic changes of the past decade have caused Third World nations to restructure economic policies, community resources, the labor market, and intrahousehold divisions of labor. These changes have swelled the ranks of the unemployed, the poor, and the malnourished. Women, in particular, have been affected negatively by processes of structural adjustment because they represent a disproportionate share of the worlds poor, are increasingly represented among low-wage workers, and are forced to balance wage work with subsistence and domestic production in meeting household needs.Using country-based studies, this text offers new perspectives on the consequences of economic crisis in terms of changing state practices and household and family organization, patterns of resource allocation, and womens work. Throughout, the contributors raise two critical questions: Fo r what segments of the population do austerity measures mean more limited access to food, social services, and unemployment? For whom do they create increased access to credit and new incentives to expand production, thus increasing accumulation and profit-making opportunities? The field-based investigations of crisis and poverty also emphasize the salience of gender relations and embrace a view of the household and its diverse organizational forms and relations as a contradictory institution in which conflict and cooperation create the complex dynamic of daily survival.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49614968357137,"sku":"GOR007422563","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0813382300.jpg?v=1750785979"},{"product_id":"unequal-burden-book-lourdes-beneria-9780813382296","title":"Unequal Burden","description":"Using country-based studies, this book provides a perspective on the consequences of economic crisis in developing countries, in terms of changing state practices, household and family organization, patterns of resource allocation, and women's work.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49630885150993,"sku":"GOR013019977","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0813382297.jpg?v=1750979618"},{"product_id":"gender-development-and-globalization-book-lourdes-beneria-9780415537490","title":"Gender, Development and Globalization","description":"Gender, Development, and Globalization is the leading primer on global feminist economics and development. Lourdes Benería, a pioneer in the field of feminist economics, is joined in this second edition by Gunseli Berik and Maria Floro to update the text to reflect the major theoretical, empirical, and methodological contributions and global developments in the last decade. Its interdisciplinary investigation remains accessible to a broad audience interested in an analytical treatment of the impact of globalization processes on development and wellbeing in general and on social and gender equality in particular. The revision will continue to provide a wide-ranging discussion of the strategies and policies that hold the most promise in promoting equitable and sustainable development. The authors make the case for feminist economics as a useful framework to address major contemporary global challenges, such as inequalities between the global South and North as well as within single countries; persistent poverty; and increasing vulnerability to financial crises, food crises, and climate change. The authors’ approach is grounded in the intellectual current of feminism and human development, drawing on Amartya Sen’s capability approach and focused on the importance of the care economy, increasing pressures faced by women, and the failures of neoliberal reforms to bring about sustainable development, reduction in poverty, inequality, and vulnerability to economic crisis.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49655278698769,"sku":"GOR010841022","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50467525132561,"sku":"CIN0415537495G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":50697120088337,"sku":"NGR9780415537490","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51190443049233,"sku":"CIN0415537495VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52431439102225,"sku":"NLS9780415537490","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53078460432657,"sku":"NIN9780415537490","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0415537495.jpg?v=1751229892"},{"product_id":"women-households-and-the-economy-book-lourdes-beneria-9780813512631","title":"Women, Households and the Economy","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49810553569553,"sku":"CIN0813512638G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0813512638.jpg?v=1751201504"},{"product_id":"gender-development-and-globalization-book-lourdes-beneria-9780415537483","title":"Gender, Development and Globalization","description":"Gender, Development, and Globalization is the leading primer on global feminist economics and development.
