Having been seriously wounded fighting for the Emperor Franz Josef in the First World War, he was forced to seek refuge from the Nazis in England shortly before the Second. As the author writes, "the circumstances of Kokoschka's long, restless and varied life are mirrored to an unusual degree in his art. His pictures speak passionately of the people and places he knew and loved, but also of the artist himself and the ideals which moved him and for which he never ceased to campaign." In this illustrated study, Calvocoressi concentrates on Kokoschka's development as a painter, from the early "psychological" portraits, through the landscapes of the 1920s and political pictures produced during the Second World War, to the final paintings on themes drawn from mythology, religion and literature. Richard Calvocoressi was for eight years a curator at the Tate Gallery, where he organized the centenary exhibition of Kokoschka's work. He is now keeper of the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh.
A study of Rene Magritte's basic philosophy and art, and particularly the development of his Surrealist style.
In their different mediums, Henry Moore (1898-1986) and Francis Bacon (1909-1992) created unforgettable images of the human figure. The distinctive visual languages that each artist developed over more than half a century were marked by a growing simplicity and monumentality of form. Their perspective differed: Moore clung to a belief in humanism, while Bacon espoused a post-humanist, nihilistic view of the world. In expressing their visions of humanity, the two artists had very different approaches: Bacon working from the outside in, disintegrating and dissolving form; Moore from the inside out, pushing anatomical structure to the surface. If Bacon's images suggest flux, chance, and the arbitrariness of existence, Moore's sculptures have been interpreted as universal symbols of strength and endurance. Bacon and Moore first exhibited together in a group exhibition at the Lefevre Gallery in London in which Bacon showed his Three Studies for Figures, at the Base of a Crucifixion (1944), propelling him into the limelight for the first time. Moore showed two sculptures from the 1930s and fourteen wartime drawings, some of which anticipate the theme (though not the savage imagery) of Bacon's triptych. Exhibiting together in a commercial gallery was repeated twice in the 1960s, when Moore and Bacon were both represented by Marlborough Fine Art. These joint shows, extensively reviewed in the press, gave critics a chance to compare the artists' radical approaches to the human figure, which were seen as complementary rather than conflicting. Fifty years later, this publication once again brings their work into direct comparison.
The great Belgian Surrealist: Magritte's paintings give a sense of the amazing, the surprising, and the ridiculous It is impossible to overlook the influence of Ren Magritte (1898-1967) on contemporary art. One of the most renowned living figurative painters of our time, Saville has set auction records and her highly sensual canvases invite us to consider the female form in all its glory. Great artists are of their moment, but push boundaries to revitalize our world. The British artist Jenny Saville is best known for painting monumental close-ups of large nude women exposing things that are usually left unshown: flab, fat, bulge. Today, when the body has never mattered more or counted less, Saville is undoubtedly the painter for our times. Saville has specialized in subjects on the margins of society: the obese, the disfigured, and transsexuals; yet under her fluctuating light and painstaking hues and layers, her subjects transcend their strangeness to take on a universal quality. Among artists of her generation, Saville is unusual in her devotion to figurative painting. This much-anticipated volume unites new work with almost all of Saville's paintings and drawings to date, many of them unpublished works. Published in association with Gagosian Gallery, the book also features a complete and illustrated chronology of the artist's career. A conversation with acclaimed American photographer Sally Mann, and essays by art critic Mark Stevens and Gagosian Director, London Richard Calvocoressi complete the volume.
A prolific artist with a protean output, Georg Baselitz has rethought the conventions of a range of media, predominantly painting and sculpture, over the course of a career of some sixty years. Born in 1938, Baselitz was expelled from art school in East Berlin in 1956 for ‘socio-political immaturity’, and moved to the western half of the city. By the late 1950s, he had rejected the dominant tendencies of both sides of the country and his singular achievement was to reintroduce the figure, compromised and discredited though it was by both Nazism and Communism, into art. By drawing attention to art by ‘outsiders’, such as psychiatric patients, and invoking a Parisian model of existentialist art and literature, Baselitz proposed an alternative European tradition that did not eliminate the human subject. In alluding later to movements in German painting such as Expressionism as well as to artists like Munch, he also consciously rehabilitated the kind of art that was condemned by Hitler as ‘degenerate’. The book follows the development of Baselitz’s unique style from his earliest work through to the most recent creations of his eighth decade. Calvocoressi’s masterful construction of a chronological narrative helps us to evaluate Baselitz’s work in terms of the disruptions of his life – historical upheavals witnessed alongside an astonishing career. However, based on a firstever collaboration between the Henry Moore Foundation and the Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg, the book also reveals some remarkable parallels with Russia's wartime experience by including drawings sketched in the basements of the Hermitage during the Siege of Leningrad which started in September 1941 and lasted for 900 days, during which time almost a third of the population died from starvation. Sketched by a young architect, Mikhail Nikolsky, the Hermitage drawings provide a fascinating counterpoint to Moores shelter drawings, which are now regarded as a high point in the creative life of one of Britains most prolific and admired sculptors of the 20th century. Timed to coincide with the 70th anniversary of the Siege in 2011, this book also includes documentary photographs of both the Blitz and the Siege of Leningrad.
Lee Miller is possibly the 20th century's most famous female photographer.
