During the reigns of his elder brothers, he carved out a career for himself as an Anglo-Norman nobleman at the court of his brother-in-law, Henry I of England. With Henry's backing and the support of his elder sister, Queen Matilda, David secured a good marriage and a rich inheritance, with estates spread from Normandy to northern England, as well as a principality of his own in southern Scotland.  On succeeding to the Scottish throne in 1124, David ruthlessly imposed his authority on the kingdom and won the respect of his Gaelic lords. As king, he began the modernisation of his kingdom along European lines. Many of the greatest families of medieval Scotland - such as the Bruces, Comyns and Stewarts - he brought in as colonists. Reform at home was coupled by aggressive expansion abroad, with David extending his power across the whole of mainland Scotland, into the Western Isles, and finally into northern England. Skillfully playing off Stephen and Matilda, the two rivals for the English throne after 1135, David tipped the balance of power in Britain firmly in favour of the Scots. It was a rich legacy to pass on to his heirs, but stripped of David's leadership, Scotland's dominant position swiftly crumbled away.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49554831278353,"sku":"GOR003978765","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49672499495185,"sku":"GOR013768669","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49684155760913,"sku":"GOR013487253","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49729647509777,"sku":"NGR9780752446721","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50332320235793,"sku":"GOR005219456","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/075244672X.jpg?v=1750701713"},{"product_id":"kings-and-queens-of-scotland-book-richard-oram-9780752419916","title":"Kings and Queens of Scotland","description":"The history of the Scottish monarchy is a long tale of triumph over adversity, characterised by the personal achievements of remarkable rulers who transformed their fragile kingdom into the master of northern Britain. Portrayed most often as either the independently-minded last great patrons of Scottish Gaelic culture or as dangerous rivals to the Stewart kings for mastery of Scotland, this collection navigates through such opposed perspectives to re-examine the politics, culture, society and connections of Highland and Hebridean Scotland from the fourteenth to sixteenth centuries. It delivers a compelling account of a land and people caught literally and figuratively between two worlds, those of the Atlantic and mainland Scotland, and of Gaelic and Anglophone culture. Inspired by Ross' own research interests, the chapters gathered here expore interlinked themes of land management and property rights, terrestrial and aquatic resource exploitation, mortality crises, and environmental change, viewed largely through the lens of the Scottish experience within the broader context of the eastern North Atlantic region and covering a chronology that spans from the sixth century CE up to the present. Including a previously unpublished paper by Ross himself, which overturns long-held perceptions of fiscal regimes in medieval Scotland, the contributors present radically revisionist or wholly new analyses of key documents and datasets, mostly through applying an interdisciplinary 'environmental turn' to primary record and narrative sources, or advancing new methodological approaches to systems analysis. From saintly interactions with nature to monastic exploitation of natural resources, charter records of land-ownership to the physicality of the landscapes recorded on parchment, and the human cost of subsistence and mortality crises, these papers humanize the discourse around historical climate and environmental change.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52663348527377,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52663349215505,"sku":"NLS9782503596990","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9782503596990.jpg?v=1762271793"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/de-de\/collections\/autor-buecher-von-richard-oram.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
