Drawing together the finest portraits from public and private collections around the world, the book explores Freud’s stylistic development and technical virtuosity. Often described as a 'painter's painter', his influence is widely felt with many of today's most successful painters from Peter Doig to Elizabeth Peyton acknowledging their debt to his work. Setting his work in the context of the National Portrait Gallery, London creates a new opportunity to consider Katz's work alongside other portrait painters of the 20th and 21st centuries. Katz's distinctive portraits are informed by his interest in billboards and his familiarity with the process of physical enlargement. His minimal aesthetic, with pristine flat surfaces and economy of line, was developed in the 1950s and was at the time both an anticipation of Pop Art and a reaction to the prevalence of Abstract Expressionism, though he chose to work independently of both movements. The selection of works in this book demonstrates the variety Katz has brought to the portrait genre with dramatic variations in scale and abrupt cinematic cropping of images painted using precise, broad areas of colour. This book presents recent, intimate works of his immediate family including his wife, Ada, son, Vincent and daughter-in-law Vivien in which his bold clarity of vision and emphatic use of colour are revealed to powerful effect. Published on the occasion of Alex Katz Portraits, National Portrait Gallery, London 15 May-21 September 2010, Alex Katz's first solo display in a UK Public Gallery for 20 years. It features an interview with Contemporary Curator, Sarah Howgate, in which Katz discusses recent practice in a new and revealing light. Pre-publication wide-scale press campaign revealing his latest high profile commission in leading national newspapers.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49602618982673,"sku":"GOR006530410","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51897174294801,"sku":"GOR011073527","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1855144263.jpg?v=1750898989"},{"product_id":"gillian-wearing-and-claude-cahun-book-sarah-howgate-9781855147508","title":"Gillian Wearing and Claude Cahun","description":"Claude Cahun and Gillian Wearing came from different backgrounds and were living in different times – about a century apart. Cahun, along with her contemporaries André Breton and Man Ray, belonged to the French Surrealist movement although her work was rarely exhibited during her lifetime. Together with her female partner, the artist and stage designer Marcel Moore, Cahun was imprisoned in German‐occupied Jersey during the Second World War as a result of her role in the French Resistance. Wearing trained at Goldsmiths and became part of the Young British Artist movement, winning the Turner Prize in 1997. She has exhibited extensively in the UK, including at the Whitechapel Gallery, and overseas, most recently at the IVAM in Valencia.    Despite their different backgrounds, obvious parallels can be drawn between the artists: they share a fascination with identity and gender, which is played out through performance, and both use masquerade and backdrops to create elaborate mis‐en‐scène. Wearing has referenced Cahun overtly in the past: Me as Cahun Holding a Mask on My Face is a reconstruction of Cahun’s self‐portrait of 1927, and forms the starting point of this exhibition.    In this book, Sarah Howgate, who has worked closely with Wearing, examines the self‐portrait work of both artists, investigating how the cultural, historical, political and personal context affects their interpretation of similar themes. The book includes reproductions of over 100 key works, presented in thematic sections including Artistic Evolution, Performance, Masquerade and Momento Mori, accompanied by a commentary. The last section features new work s by Wearing: a ‘collaboration’ (of sorts) with Cahun. The book also includes a revealing interview with Wearing by Howgate and an illuminating essay on Cahun by writer and curator Dawn Ades.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49663085740305,"sku":"GOR008942002","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50495114871057,"sku":"GOR013972234","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53175813177617,"sku":"GOR013226235","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1855147505.jpg?v=1751249411"},{"product_id":"david-hockney-portraits-book-sarah-howgate-9781855143753","title":"David Hockney Portraits","description":"David Hockney is one of the most significant artists exploring and pushing the boundaries of figurative art today. He has been engaged with portraiture since his teenage years, when he painted Portrait of My Father (1955), and portraits of family, lovers, friends and well-known subjects represent an intimate visual diary of the artist's life.  This authoritative new study examines Hockney's portraits in all media - painting, drawing, photocollage and prints - and is produced in close collaboration with the artist. Together, the authors reveal how Hockney's creative development and concerns about representation can be traced through his portrait work: from his iconic double portraits of the late 1960s and early 1970s to his cubist-influenced investigations of the 1980s and from his recent camera lucida drawings to his return to painting from life in oils. Featuring over 250 works from the past fifty years, David Hockney Portraits illustrates not only the range and innovation of his creative practice but also the circular nature of his subjects and artistic pre-occupations. David Hockney Portraits includes essays by Sarah Howgate, Contemporary Curator at the National Portrait Gallery, Barbara Stern Shapiro, Curator for Special Projects at the Museum of Fine Arts, Mark Glazebrook, Marco Livingstone and award-winning author Edmund White. The book will also include notes on sitters and an illustrated chronology.  Published to accompany a major exhibition, David Hockney Portraits, at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (26 February- 14 May 2006), Los Angeles County Museum of Art (11 June- 4 September 2006) and the National Portrait Gallery, London (12 October 2006-21 January 2007).","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49681369399569,"sku":"GOR003448498","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51487978389777,"sku":"GOR008495362","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1855143755.jpg?v=1751249406"},{"product_id":"david-hockney-drawing-from-life-book-sarah-howgate-9781855147973","title":"David Hockney: Drawing from Life","description":"This book, which accompanies the first major exhibition devoted to David Hockney’s drawings inover 20 years,will explore Hockney as a draughtsman from the 1950s to now, with a focus on himself, his family and friends. From Ingres to the iPad –this book demonstrates the artist’s ingenuity in portrait drawing with reference to both tradition and technology.  David Hockney is recognised as one of the master draughtsmen of our times and a champion of the medium. This book will feature Hockney’s work from the 1950s to now and focus on his depictions of himself and a smaller group of sitters close to him: his muse, Celia Birtwell; his mother, Laura Hockney; and his friends, the curator, Gregory Evans, and master printer, Maurice Payne.  This book will examine not only how drawing is fundamental to Hockney’s distinctive way of observing the world around him, but also how it has been a testing ground for ideas and modes of expression later played out in his paintings.  From Old Masters to modern masters, from Holbein to Picasso, Hockney’s portrait drawings reveal his admiration for his artistic predecessors and his continuous stylistic experimentation throughout his career.  Alongside an in-depth essay from the curator, this book will feature an exclusive interview between author and curator, Sarah Howgate, and artist, David Hockney. In addition, an ‘In Focus’ essay by British Museum curator Isabel Seligman, will explore the relationship between Hockney, Ingres and Picasso drawings.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49684718321937,"sku":"GOR011271473","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49738071900433,"sku":"NGR9781855147973","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50401276657937,"sku":"CIN1855147971G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51053686325521,"sku":"NIN9781855147973","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51879612907793,"sku":"GOR014442533","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53207693197585,"sku":"GOR011044314","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1855147971.jpg?v=1751441796"},{"product_id":"lucian-freud-s-sketchbooks-book-gayford-martin-9781855147157","title":"Lucian Freud's Sketchbooks","description":"Lucian Freud was one of the world’s greatest realist artists. Jenny Saville: The Anatomy of Painting brings together works from across the artist’s career, ranging from pencil drawings to monumental paintings in oil.    The British artist Jenny Saville is one of today’s leading painters, for whom painting the human body gives the artist ‘the possibility to work in both an abstract and figurative way’. Jenny Saville: The Anatomy of Painting accompanies Saville’s first major museum exhibition, showcasing over 50 works from throughout her career in a broadly chronological framework. Essays consider the development of Saville’s practice, marking key moments and the strong connection she makes to art history, while a conversation with the artist gives us a glimpse into her life in the studio, her working methods and influences.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51628606685457,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51628607897873,"sku":"NGR9781855145948","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52718765244689,"sku":"GOR014596238","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52720244785425,"sku":"GOR014597388","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1855145944.jpg?v=1770373422"},{"product_id":"lucian-freud-book-sarah-howgate-9781855148154","title":"Lucian Freud","description":"Drawing into Painting reveals Lucian Freud’s lifelong focus on the human face and form, tracing the intimate dialogue between his sketches and paintings from the 1930s to the early 21st century.   Lucian Freud (1922–2011) is celebrated as one of the great figurative realist artists of the twentieth century, who devoted his artistic life to portraiture. Famously stating that ‘everything is a portrait’, he created intensely observed portraits of animals and plants, as well as his family members and those in his social circle and daily life.   Drawing into Painting explores how drawing remained central to Freud’s artistic practice throughout his life. From quick sketches to finished works in charcoal, pastel, and etching, his drawings offer a rare window into his process, revealing shifts in style, experimentation, and his evolving way of seeing. Spanning from his childhood to his final years, the book traces the unconventional path from his drawing practice to his painting, and back again.  Alongside a selection of key paintings by Freud and others, the book includes conversations with David Dawson, Freud’s close friend and assistant, and Bella Freud, the artist’s daughter. Insightful essays by writer and curator Catherine Lampert, British Museum drawings curator Isabel Seligman, and acclaimed novelist Colm Tóibín further illuminates Freud’s world and legacy.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53134069661969,"sku":"GOR014764551","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53383260012817,"sku":"NIN9781855148154","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781855148154.jpg?v=1772102977"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/de-de\/collections\/autor-buecher-von-sarah-howgate.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
